Inspiring Conversations with Lakeya Mitchell of Transfigurations Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakeya Mitchell.

Hi Lakeya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Have you heard of the poem, “The Rose that Grew From The Concrete” by Tupac Shakur? That poem speaks life to my story. This story begins with trauma. Trauma and the process of healing created the foundation of Transfigurations Counseling. At the early age of 12 years old, my world was changed and shattered. Everything shifted in no time.

My vision changed, I was no longer me, I hated mirrors, I was fearful, I hated myself and could only see myself as nothing more than damaged goods. My mom took me to counseling, and I met an amazing therapist. It wasn’t until much later that the tools she introduced to me at 12 years began to shape my life. I now have a full understanding of “All Things Work Together for The GOOD of Those Who are Called According to His Purpose.” What the enemy meant for my bad, God turned around for my good.

My purpose was birthed through my trauma and pain. You see it’s important to understand that no matter what you are faced with never give up because God can use anything to make a masterpiece. My Masterpiece… Transfigurations Counseling.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road was filled with learning by trial and error. I was not aware of all that was required to start a business therefore I learned as I went through the process. Which means along the way I had to start over. I had to first determine the proper way to structure my business (501 C3, LLC, S Corp, etc.).

Intricate details like the pricing were a challenge because I wasn’t sure how to set prices for my business to ensure sustainability. After starting my business, I had to make several shifts. I had to first shift from an employee to an entrepreneur. No longer did I have to consult management to set the goals etc. All choices, plans, and creative ways to achieve them, we’re up to me.

Of course, that meant working much harder and having longer workdays to ensure the success of Transfigurations. Which also includes opening in the middle of a pandemic.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Transfigurations Counseling, we are all about promoting self-love. We are committed to providing a life-changing experience to each client who is dealing with trauma, addiction, anxiety, abuse, depression, PTSD, marriage challenges, and family challenges.

We desire to support adolescents, adults, couples, and families by helping them work through life’s many hurdles. We are here to assist you with all your counseling needs. What sets us apart, is that we not trying to be set apart but we are trying to join other therapists and mental health organizations who are working together to bring change and end the mental health stigma in all communities.

That is the agenda!!! The agenda is not to put my name on the map but to help everyone who is nameless who is struggling with mental health disorders.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking?
Taking measured and balanced risks is proof of our faith in God. Walking out on faith to leave a job and start my business was a risk in itself. I wasn’t sure what would happen but I trusted God’s timing and his wisdom. I’m glad I listened.
