Meet Jessica Koski of Nested

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Koski.

Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My own postpartum experience as a teen mom stationed overseas! I recognized pretty quickly that families severely needed support!

My ex-husband was in the military, so once we were moved to Hunter Army Airfield, and while pregnant with our second of three kids, I started looking into programs. It somewhat snowballed after that, as I went on to get an associate’s degree and a bachelor of science in Maternal and Child Health. From there, I obtained my lactation training and prepared myself for a home birth with our third.

I’d like to say my passion started at the beginning, but my work at the health department for 2 years really opened my eyes to underserved communities and the lack of support from the one week to the six weeks postpartum visit with your OBGYN. My heart is really in the postpartum work, but I also enjoy prenatal education and the births are so much fun!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any small business, I had ups and downs! I was in school full time, raising three kids, and working mostly full-time while I created “Nested.” I had several small offices, but I knew I needed more space because my vision was big! The pandemic happening just weeks after finalizing my divorce did not help, but after a year of work and teaming up with another local doula, Marissa Peterson, Nested finally became a real place!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Nested provides support, education, and advocacy for new and growing families. We offer everything from private prenatal consultations to postpartum medical evaluations of a breastfeeding dyad. Our full list is limitless, but we do birth, postpartum, and bereavement doula packages, lactation consultations with an international board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC), placenta encapsulation, and classes for birth and breastfeeding.

We offer a structured environment for education and we have streamlined the process. Many of our services are even covered by health insurance! Our goal is to ensure every kind of family feels welcome, comfortable, and confident when the process is done. We want them to feel “Nested!”

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I actually wanted to be a paleontologist when I was little, but once I forgot about my favorite dinosaur movie, I think I subconsciously knew I’d be in healthcare. I was always drawn to birth stories, being healthy, and advocating for myself and others.

I loved teaching, so I was part of the “Future Educators of America” in high school, as well as taking part in the student council. I love art and music too, so I like to bring all of that into my workspace. Everything but the dinosaurs I guess!
