Meet Emma Fischer of Bad Witch Nails

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Fischer.

Hi Emma, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I am originally from Brooklyn, NY, but I have been living in Savannah for 15 years now! I have always been an artist and a maker. As a SCAD student, I studied Fibers, and was always into very tiny art! I didn’t really get into nail art until a few years after I graduated.

But basically one day I fell into the Youtube Nail Art rabbit-hole and was totally amazed and intrigued by all the cool products and tiny little things you could do on nails. My previous work always had sort of a fashion bent to it, and I felt like nail art was just the perfect intersection of art and fashion for me.

I would paint cool things on my nails, and soon enough everyone around me was asking me to do their nails, so I enrolled in Savannah Tech and got my Nail Technician License. I can’t believe how quickly Bad Witch Nails has grown. In three years, I have been able to go completely independent, mostly thanks to all my amazing clients spreading the word!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
COVID really didn’t help, as everyone knows. When the lockdowns happened, I was very worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep the momentum that I had going, but staying active on social media helped me pick up right where I left off when the lockdowns ended. The biggest struggle for me has been learning how to be an efficient businesswoman.

The artist aspect comes easily to me, but the logistical stuff is harder. Working for myself I have found that I am simultaneously a very strict boss and also a very lazy employee (HA) so finding that balance can be hard sometimes.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I usually call myself a nail artist rather than a nail technician. I specialize in gel nail services, which are safer for your nails and create a lot less dust and odor than traditional acrylic nail applications. But I am really known for nail art!

Ranging from simple to elaborate, my clients come to me for fun, colorful, expressive manicures that embody their personalities, or maybe an event they are attending. I don’t think I have done a one-color mani in over a year, no boring nails at my table!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Creating meaningful connections with my clients! Design skills are important, but the reason I have stayed in Savannah for so long is the close-knit creative community. I love how we all support and build each other up.

Getting to know my clients helps me create looks that fit their personalities and aesthetics and create manicures that make them feel happy and confident, which is really what I think the beauty industry is all about – making clients feel good in their own skin.
