Today we’d like to introduce you to Barron Damon.
Hi Barron, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story began as a freshman in college when my life changed forever. I was mugged on my way back to my dorm from a campus party. I refer to it as my defining moment in life. That unfortunate event left me wounded and emotionally scarred, which led to a downward spiral in my life. As a result of the incident and my failure to get the proper support and help, I lost my scholarship and was suspended from the university. My life seemed to have changed at that moment. I now say that I was in the wrong place at the right time.
As I look back at my life in retrospect, I see a person that was selfish and only cared about himself. I was driven by money and success and was not concerned about giving back to others. God had another plan for my life. It took me several years to recover and start the process of getting my life back on track to become a productive person in my community. The irony of my story is that my life not only dramatically changed, but I started helping the same type of young people that was responsible for my mugging. The only position I applied for after going back to school and graduating from college was a role at Big Brothers and Big Sisters. I decided to commit my life to help those who are socially and economically disadvantaged.
My new passion for helping people also stirred up the entrepreneurial gifts that existed in my family for at least two generations before me. During my time at Big Brothers’ Big Sisters, I helped thousands of young people and trained thousands of volunteers. I became a personal trainer to help young children dealing with obesity. My wife and I started a business called Right Time Kids to help single parents gain independence while still supporting their children with a safe and fun place to go during work hours. Six years ago, we created the business of life CC (BOLCC) because we wanted to teach people how to apply business principles to their lives. Our current business is a one-stop-shop for a variety of services.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been smooth, but the journey has been a blessing. In my story, I talk about how I got mugged my freshman year in college that dramatically changed my life for the worse.
I lost my academic scholarship and got suspended from my university, which was the beginning of my life spiraling out of control. I lost important friendships, distanced myself from my family, and started hanging with a bad crowd that took me way off track in my life. Due to the university academic policy, I could not re-enroll for four years after applying each year only to get rejected year after year. In the fifth year, they allowed me to re-enroll to complete my degree.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Six years ago, we created The Business of Life CC (BOLCC). Under the business of life CC umbrella is BOLCC coaching and consulting, BOLCC travel, BOLCC events, and BOLCC realty. We specialize in online and in-person education, transformation coaching, online course creation, travel education, and event design and management. In 2020, we created the BK Damon Foundation to provide scholarship and business grants to young people going to college or starting their businesses. We support missions work domestically and abroad and will be launching our new Go Giver Project in the spring of next year. Ten percent of our business proceeds go to the BK Damon Foundation.
We are excited about our latest business venture called Survivor Friendly which is a partnership with a close friend. We provide mastectomy and post-surgical bras, custom and off the shelf prosthesis, compression garments, specialty wigs and head coverings, and much more to cancer survivors in an intimate boutique style setting that focuses on providing exceptional service and care for those who want to live and enjoy life beyond their diagnosis. We strongly believe in creating partnerships with others in business to bring together our talents and our resources for greater impact. As I look over my life, I am thankful for that life-defining moment that happened to me as a college freshman. It literally changed the trajectory of my life. As a Rotarian, I can now identify with our motto, which is “service over self.”
Before the mugging, I was self-serving and had no desire to give back to others. As a certified professional transformation coach through the International Coaching Federation (ICF), I share with others how the business of life can help them “live in freedom every day, regardless of their past or current situation.”
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
There are three important qualities that I try to amplify in my life to bring about daily and long-term success. Each of us have many decisions that we make daily which is why using Wisdom becomes so important. Some of our decisions could impact us for years to come. Bad decisions cause us to lose time, money, and energy. Using wisdom allows us to use sound judgement and make decisions that can move our lives forward. Discipline is also an important quality because it requires us to use self-control which can be difficult. Discipline is like a muscle that must be trained and strengthened to be utilized when you need it the most. Discipline helps keep us focused and moving forward. The last quality is like the glue that binds the other two together. It’s the driver. It allows you to keep doing the right things over and over to become successful. Consistency brings about a standard that helps you establish success now and in the future. Without having a level of consistency, you will find yourself constantly starting and stopping, which prohibits you from moving forward.
