Inspiring Conversations with Tamaya Grant of The TK Lofts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamaya Grant.

Hi Tamaya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I sparked an interest in the hair at the age of 15. I would babysit my little cousin and do her hair and I loved doing it. I started Cosmetology school in high school at the age of 17. I became a licensed Master Cosmetologist in 2013 and have been building my empire and increasing my knowledge since then.

Unfortunately, I lost both of my parents at a young age. These things affected me of course but never a roadblock to stop me from achieving what I wanted out of life. I’m a mother of one to my daughter, Teigen. I also own a salon called the TK Lofts and a hot tools line called TK Heat catering to textured hair. I’ve mastered the art of hair repair and maintenance along with style. I’m now teaching that to my apprentice/assistant, Alexis! I’m excited about the many possibilities and growth we’ll both have very soon.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Juggling Motherhood, having a salon, a hot tools line, self-care and the demands of social media algorithms can be challenging and time-consuming. Also, just being my worst enemy sometimes. The vision can be so big that it’s scary, to almost make me feel that I don’t deserve that. Yet it’s my thoughts, I have the abilities. I have to be my own cheerleader and reinforce that I got it, 100%. Why not me?

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in helping people map out their healthy hair journey whether relaxed, color-treated, natural, or all of the above. I understand the science of hair and what It takes to make hair willingly behave. I’m known for doing a bomb Silkpress, I’m great at precision cutting, I color very well and when it comes to a short wavy pixie cut, I’m your girl!

What sets me apart from others is that I truly focus on healthy beautiful hair. Also, I’m very honest with my clients and educate them on their hair. I’m serious about my mission as a hairstylist. I refuse to do Anything to compromise my client’s hair no matter how nice it will look temporarily.

What else would you like our readers to know?
I’d like the readers to know that I’m passionate about what I do. Being in the service industry can be hard yet just like a waitress/waiter the better you serve the happier your customers will be. Your client retention goes up and the money earned goes up as well. I enjoy improving my serving skills day by day, especially due to the fact that I mainly serve black women. We deserve to be nurtured in that way.

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
I honestly don’t know where the industry will be in the next 5 to 10 years. All I can really do is speak for my own journey. To be of service to the industry I’d like to be an educator and help make hair care for black women less of a mystery.
