Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Rodriguez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out in the beauty industry in 2006. The beginning of my journey was when I took a job as a Receptionist at an Aveda Salon in Naples. FL. During this time, I was in limbo about which way that I was going to go in my career path. I worked my way into a management position, then attended school for esthetics.
I knew when I stepped foot into the salon, there was no other industry that I wanted to be in. The passion, the energy, the strong independent women that worked with an amazing payoff. After moving back to the East Coast of Florida, in 2008, I noticed a huge decline in skincare services due to the crash in the economy at that time. I took it upon myself to look into the Aveda Institute that was just built in Fort Lauderdale. I went for a tour and was signed up for the Master Cosmetology program within an hour. I also received a full Pell Grant, which was the icing on the cake!
After completing my 1800, long, and time-consuming program. I was ready to move into the world of Hair!! And it’s all been uphill from there! I got my first job at a resort in North Miami Beach, in 2010. That’s when my passion for Creative Wedding Styling began. From that point on, I perfected and sharpened my hair and makeup skills. After moving to Savannah in 2016, I started working as an Independent Contractor. Taking on weddings as a full-time position.
Starting from scratch in a new city definitely had its challenges. But, it got me to where I am now! And I’m truly grateful for all the challenges that I endured. I now do an average of 75 weddings a year and opened my own salon studio. I’m able to dedicate my time to everything beauty, as a self-employed entrepreneur!!!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
During the economic crash of 2008, I had to rethink my business plan. Working in the world of skincare and waxing wasn’t extremely profitable. That’s when I made the decision to go back to school full-time, to get my full cosmetology license. I was able to build an amazing clientele in Miami Beach after graduating. Then in 2015, I had my son, Oliver. I and my husband were both over the hustle and bustle of the city!
When we relocated to Savannah, I had to completely start from scratch with no connections whatsoever. Coming from a place that lived my entire life, to a city where I knew nobody was my biggest challenge yet! The motivation of wanting to be a mom, and still work was as well a major challenge. As I continued into the wedding industry in savannah, I was able to meet so many amazing professionals along the way!
I knew that I was ready to make a full commitment to owning my salon studio! After touring Sola Salons, I was in love! But the timing was off. I waited a YEAR to make the decision to sign my lease. Now, I just celebrated three years owning Lux Beauty Bar and haven’t looked back!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Master Cosmetologist and a Salon Studio owner. I specialize in bridal, and editorial hair and makeup. I also am a seasoned body waxer and colorist!
I think I would say that I’m most known for my work in production. I did hair and makeup on set for Bravo’s Southern Charm Savannah/Charleston. While many do know me for my TV work, my bridal hair and makeup set me apart from others.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For those who are starting out, DONT EVER GIVE UP!!! I believe that we are in the full power of our destiny and manifesting our future! There is no age limit or being “past the time” to engage in something that you have passion for!
I went to school at age 27 for Esthetics and graduated at 30 with my cosmetology license. Waking up every day and doing what you love is the best goal to have! And of course… DON’T EVER GIVE UP!! ( Can you tell that this is my mantra!?).
