Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulette Patterson.
Hi Paulette, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was very athletic at a young age and have always been fascinated by how the human body works. I had my sight of going to school for Physical Therapy, but I became a mother first and found a different approach through Massage Therapy. Being a Physical Therapist was still a part of my game plan but at a slower pace.
Once I started my journey with Massage Therapy, I got comfortable. Having a great teacher, program director, mentor, as well as clients who gave back positive and critical feedback, made me feel at home with what I do. To see the physical changes with my helping hands gave me a new revamped purpose.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am HOH (hard of hearing; severe), so school and work have been a struggle, but I push through always. I learned to read lips at a young age so that’s been helping a lot with communicating with doctors and clients. It’s been a little difficult with COVID-19 being around, but I’m managing and my clients are so understanding.
I always leave open communication so I can better understand you. It’s also an awesome feeling when I service the HOH and deaf community because not many cater to that part of society. So although there are challenges, there are also rewards.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Hiatus Massage?
I have been a Licensed Massage Therapist since 2016. After working for various spas and a chiropractic office I decided to venture out on my own. We go to doctors for the health of our organs, but who do we see for the muscles of our body before a minor issue becomes major? For our daily aches and pain as well as stress? That’s where I come in.
I offer modalities that promote healing, mobility, relief, relaxation, and body awareness customized into specialized massages such as prenatal, sports, injuries, and medical massage. I’m also working on making my own natural products to use on my clients. So definitely be on the lookout for those, Often times massage is seen as just a luxury. Although I do offer spa parties, events, and home services, whether it’s a full-body or chair massage.
It’s really a form of self-care for the wellness of your physical, emotional, and mental health. Not many see a Massage Therapist as a part of healthcare. Touch is a healing sensory. My goal for my practice is to develop a stronger relationship between doctor-patient-therapist and rid ourselves of the stigmas that surround massages.
I seek to have my clients verbally explain their goals and then allow my hands and their muscles to communicate with each other. From there, we create a treatment plan together in hopes of adopting better body and stress habits.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I would like to say I was and possibly still am shy. I think a lot of that stems from me having hearing loss. I try not to let it hinder me because I pretty much had a normal childhood for the most part. I was raised by my parents with 10 other siblings so there was always someone around. I would say I’ve had a nurturing trait early on at the age of six. The birth of my first younger brother made me aware of that.
I find it amazing that we can remember key parts in our lives, lol. I’ve always been one to run with the boys. Running was my thing. Playing 2 hand touch football with my older brother and his friends in the neighborhood was a highlight. That eventually led to me playing basketball and running track in middle school. That time in my life was maybe one of the best parts. I wasn’t popular but I was all around.
I met some of the greatest people that I call friends and family at that age who are still in my life now. In high school, I leaned away from sports to start working. I still remained actives by lifting weights and going to sports tryouts for the joy of it. Poetry and drawing have always been and still are a part of my life. I’m a working mom so I’ve cut back on those, but I still enjoy those parts of me.
I’ve been fortunate enough to find like-minded people to still experience things I love and that grows with me. Evolving is a huge part of my life experience.
