Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaylyn Roberson.
Hi Jaylyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
First & foremost, my name is Jaylyn Roberson & I’m the owner of laidbybug on Instagram. I am a self taught wig colorist/specialist. It all began a few years ago when I was just trying to make things easier for myself by learning a new skill & that skill was doing my own hair (making wigs). That new task that I picked up eventually became a business for me. However it’s bigger than a business, it’s bigger than hair, it’s an experience, it’s the culture, it’s what my ancestors dreamt of, & lastly it’s art. I am an artist, not a hairstylist, I take time and liking in my craft.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not, you can’t be great without a few bumps in the road. As stated before I am self taught in everything I do pertaining to my business meaning I had to teach myself those fundamentals. Learning what’s for your business and what’s not by yourself is mind-boggling but definitely builds character. Another bump in the road would be is I don’t ask for support/help. I don’t ask for reposts or shoutouts, etc. because if the support is genuine then it shows. Meaning that majority of my clientele coming in is because of word of mouth from past clients & my work speaks for itself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’d love to tell you more! 🙂 I specialize in wigs…for now. Some of the services I provide are wig revamp, wig construction, wig coloring, etc. I’m most known for my killer coloring job(s)! I can remove color, I can add color, I can make custom color, whatever you want I can do, I promise! I also have other side ’m proud of every step along the journey to greatness. My drive, mindset, & determination is what sets me apart from others! As stated before this is bigger than hair this is only the phase one!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was fascinated in everything! Art, animals, sports, whatever you name it. Growing up when my artistic side was peaking I would draw pictures for my cousins & they all wanted one. My artistic side went into hiding once I became an athlete but eventually, we reconnected once sports was out of the picture. That reconnection was through hair. The wig is my canvas, the dye brush is my paintbrush & that final result is the masterpiece!
