Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Phillips.
Hi Sage, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I’ve been making videos I thought were funny for as long as I can remember. It started back when I was 8 or 9 using my parent’s digital camcorder, making skits with my siblings. Later in middle school, I made gaming videos on YouTube where I learned editing and pacing for videos.
In high school, I started posting singing videos where my first Youtube video hit 100k views and I was ecstatic. After graduation and now in college, I found myself making more content that I think is funny because I enjoy doing it. The goal is to make somebody laugh because without sounding cliché it is one of the most beautiful things people can share.
Now, I get DMs from people that I’ve never met, telling me that I helped them make it through their day and that makes me so grateful to be in the position that I am.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been smooth. I’m most grateful that my parents are incredibly supportive. My mother is very creative and entrepreneurial, she went to an art college called SCAD where she graduated with her master’s.
My father is an incredibly hard worker and has two bachelor’s degrees and has worked 14-hour days for as long as I can remember at multiple hospitals. I’ve gone to 3 different colleges trying to figure out what I wanted to do, in-between I was always trying to start some type of business and working a side job.
Now I’m putting all my effort into creating content and I’m happy to say it’s finally working out.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create content to make people laugh. As of this interview, my most popular platform is TikTok with 190K, then my Instagram with 30k, and then Youtube which I just started. I would say my most popular group of videos are related to Five Nights At Freddy’s which is a popular videogame where I used sounds from it to make different relatable scenarios.
At one point, I felt as if that’s all that people would respond to but as more people gained interest in me, they also became interested in everything I was posting so I was able to have more creative freedom and branch into new sounds. I’m probably most proud of knowing that I’ve helped people who are sad.
There have been times when I’ve cried from messages that I’ve gotten from people saying things like “I know you don’t know me, but I see your videos a lot and my life has really sucked recently but you help me smile. So, thank you.” What sets me apart, that’s a hard one.
I just try to be as genuine and helpful as possible but I’ll let other people decide on that one.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Thankfully I feel like my journey is just beginning but I would say one of the most important things I’ve learned so far is that being kind to people has never cost me anything. If not come back to benefit everyone involved.
