Life & Work with Blaine Harper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blaine Harper.

Hi Blaine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Music has always been a big part of my life even at an early age. My dad who is also a DJ exposed me to turntables while I was still in diapers. As a teen, I tagged along with him to various events such as weddings, school dances, and private parties learning the craft of DJing. He taught me how to actually mix two songs in key so that one flowed into another seamlessly as if they were one.

This traditional way of DJing requires matching up the BPM (Beats Per Minute) only using my ears to rely on. He also taught me how to prepare my sets and most importantly read any crowd that was thrown my way.

By shadowing my father over the years, I perfected my own mixing technique and style becoming a crowd favorite whenever I hop on the 1’s & 2’s. My freshman year at Georgia Southern University is where my journey as a DJ really started to take off. I wasn’t even old enough to enter the bar; however, I made the right connections at the right time, so when I had the opportunity to play, the owner of the club heard me.

A couple of months later, I became the resident DJ for the next four years building my name and practicing my craft. After my time in Statesboro, I transitioned into Savannah playing the 3rd Floor of Club 51 Degrees until I was discovered by Elan. I’ve been the Resident DJ of Elan for the past three years playing Direct Support for superstars such as Yung Gravy, Dillon Francis, Travis Porter, Hippie Sabotage, Flosstradamus, Nitti Gritti, and many more.

In addition to DJing, I am also a music producer known as LVNLIFE (pronounced Livin’ Life) who creates electronic dance music (EDM) trying to break through as an artist headlining my own shows.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been fortunate enough not to have many struggles and have been blessed with people along the way who believed in me and has given me opportunities to elevate my career as a DJ and Artist.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for rocking the dancefloor and interacting with the crowd. I accomplish this by dancing, hyping up the crowd on the mic, and most importantly feeling- the music.

I use creative ways to mix the hook (15-30 sec) which is the recognizable bit of a song you remember, hum, and sing along to so the energy never dies on the dancefloor unless I intentionally want to break the crowd down to build them right back up. I call this the (Trampoline Method)

While most DJs are too focused on trying to match the tempo (BPM) by watching their laptop screen, I listen by ear in my headphones which gives me the advantage to feel the emotion of the music.

One thing that sets me apart from others is I try to tell a story and take the listener on a journey throughout the duration of my set. My unique edits are packed with energy and include popular songs that you wouldn’t normally think would mesh together.

I am most proud that I have the ability to integrate my own original songs & remixes into my sets. It’s unbelievably rewarding to see the crowd bounce and move to something I’ve created…

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I enjoy the city’s historical scenery. I like how the city appeals to a variety of people’s interests because there’s always something to take part in whether it’s events, clubs, or restaurants.

A vibe for everyone. I dislike how parking is limited and I have the tickets to prove it.
