Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana von Tauber.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I dabbled in the creative arts from childhood going from dancing to drawing to writing to photography to painting and that’s when being an artist finally stuck. In 2014, I realized I kept fumbling my way through the integration process of having moved to Savannah from living in Europe and South Florida most of my life.
The conservative nature felt heavy. This led me to create my first erotic art collection, Art Porn (2015), which caused some local controversy and pinned me to defend my reasoning. If a well known male American oil painter, John Currin, was able to get away with a Danish porn style art collection that was hung in a museum and considered “art”, why couldn’t an unknown female artist get away with creating erotic imagery in Savannah as “art” too?
This catapulted me into the direction I hold today as an artist painting exclusively sensual and erotica fine art. What makes me an anomaly in that I’m doing this in the American south more than that I’m doing it at all.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My main struggles have been finding galleries and venues to show my artwork due to its erotic nature and this is why I recently opened my own space on 509 Barnard St, where I can offer my audience a place to view the art in a safe and suiting environment.
I also find incredible hardship managing through social media’s community guidelines. I have had to get creative with my content but have been warned several times that my accounts may be shut down. Unfortunately for artists today, if you want to be any kind of success, social media is necessary. I have higher challenges to that extent than most artists do because my genre is the road less traveled.
As a result, I joined Patreon, an artist pay-for-content platform to show off the NSFW artwork safely online. Success demands we find alternatives and workarounds to the challenges presented because they will always exist.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create figurative paintings that celebrate the eroticism of humanity, the beauty of femininity, and the sensuality of sex. I seek to represent sexuality and the erotic life in a beautiful, elegant, and approachable way. Sexuality is a universal language and the action of creation, thus it deserves more respect and less shame, moral judgment, and political or religious dogma-based pressures.
The Art Porn Collection’s original pieces really came through me as though I were merely a medium for the message. It wasn’t really an expression of me but the message chose me. At best, I sought to view the beautiful sexual realm society cheapens, exploits and takes for granted as elevated to something approachable.
The sexual realm deserved a painting that wasn’t an insulting expression using pornography but rather, an invitation into the world of pornography’s beauty, approachability, and quite frankly a mirror of one’s own actions at some point in time.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I do not in any way feel or ever felt – unless someone told me that it could be so – that being a girl, a female, or a woman hinders my ability in career achievements.
Ever. In fact, it has always been and probably always will be that my actual ability and maybe personality have or may in the future hinder my success but never the fact that I have a sweet flower between my legs.
This is a societal imposition of thought that I never subscribed to.
