Life & Work with Jody Tuso-Key

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jody Tuso-Key.

Hi Jody, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I’ve been a theater geek since I was 8 when I played “Mrs. Anguish” in a Sherlock Holmes spoof THE CASE OF THE MISSING PEARLS with the Colorado Springs summer Parks and Recreation program. My parents shared their love of theater with their 5 girls, and I passed it on to my children.

I also have a passion for writing and wanted to review entertainment of all genres. I first voiced my idea in 2018 for an entertainment blog to my middle son and some close friends.

My husband suggested instead of being a critic, we highlight what was good about a performance. A friend suggested the name Speakeysie since it would not be a critical review blog, and I came up with the spelling using my last name in the second syllable for brand recognition.

From there, I chose a website domain and began contacting theaters and writing. In addition to being a special education teacher, I’d been working in the children’s theater industry and knew many Atlanta artists. I’d also ushered at some area theaters, so I already knew some contacts.

I was able to reach out to other theaters via social media, and now have all the major Atlanta theaters on my contact list. We’ve recently been branching out to include music and travel.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Covid was definitely an obstacle, but we reviewed online content and luckily theaters were able to bounce back.

Currently, the high cost of gas has made it difficult for me to see shows, as some of the venues are more than 50 miles away. I’ve been doing more promoting than reviewing for this reason.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Not only am I the managing editor of Speakeysie, but I also teach 7th grade Special Education math, and I’m the director of the Spartan Performing Arts Academy in Oakwood, GA. We’re an after-school children’s theater program.

I’m most proud of my own children, ages 25, 23, and 20. They are my light and inspiration.

What sets Speakeysie apart from others is our positive outlook on the things we review. We have a special relationship with our clients because of this. Not only do we review, but we also promote. We love to do ticket giveaways on social media, as well as run press releases and photo flashes on our blog.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I’ve learned that we’re resilient, can reinvent the way we entertain, and the connection is important.
