Today we’d like to introduce you to Karin Husty.
Hi Karin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Chicago and moved to Atlanta in 1978, where I received a BA with a concentration in Art and Music, with a minor in Accounting.
Inspired by the luminosity and textural qualities of Oil and Cold Wax medium, Karin boldly abstracts her subjects with unique compositions and complex colors. Whether she’s creating an abstract non-objective, still life, or
landscape, her intention is to offer a unique experience leaving openings for the viewer to fill. Merging abstract and representational elements are her specialty.
Awarded the President’s Purchase Award and BFA degree from North Georgia College and University in Art and Music, Karin’s artwork is held in public and private collections worldwide. Karin is painting full-time in her new studio in Alpharetta, Georgia, and reemerging on the Art scene after a career in finance.
She recently achieved “Associate with Distinction” 2021 status with American Women Artists, after
her jury into the National Juried Exhibition, “Lifting the Sky”.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My parents always encouraged my creative spirit, however always guided me towards a career that was quote, stable… so my art took second fiddle to a business career. My dream was always to pursue a career in Fine Art.
Finally, I find myself a full-time re-emerging artist creating bodies of artwork with Gallery representation! A goal realized and an ongoing life’s work that I am excited to pursue. Traveling has inspired my artwork and my short drive to the Georgia coast and in particular the City of Savannah. I have made it a goal to have a second home in this inspiring city that holds a deep and vast history.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Artist Statement
It is the intuitive, mysterious, and meditative process of creating that motivates me to come into the studio every day. “For the sake of painting” is reason enough for me to start exploring my art tools. I love to paint!
The method of spreading oil and wax over a substrate with a buttery texture, like icing a cake, excites my senses and gives the blank canvas a starting point to evolve. Sketching with charcoal, pastels, and graphite during the under layers evoke interesting shapes. Scraping back into the layers provides me opportunities to reveal the paintings’ history of surprising colors and gestural lines peeking through, which gives me clues on where the piece wants to take me.
My abstract land and waterscapes emerge with recognizable elements of the earth, water, and sky, gleaned from my North Georgia residence and travels. I am always challenging myself to capture the expansive atmosphere, translucent waters, and textural buildings and bridges in an abstract way that allows the viewer to spark a memory or familiarity of their own.
Still life painting has always intrigued me, whether the subject is a chair, vase, or apple, my goal is to treasure ordinary objects in unique montages and unexpected compositions.
My non-objective work is built by expressive lines with organic and geometric shapes. The inside and the outside world around me is a constant source of inspiration and my imagination takes over to express my artistic voice that is constantly evolving.
Currently, I am creating a body of work inspired by the city of Savannah since my first visits 3 years ago. Wandering the stunning cemeteries’ artifacts, strolling the riverfront docks, and discovering the amazing architecture within this magical city. My goal is to depict Savannah through my artistic eyes.
Recently I have applied for the “On::view Artist Residency Program” through the Sulfur Studios, Savannah to further my pursuit to design unique abstracted landscape/riverscape and depict interesting viewpoints of the beautiful cemetery sculptures, and illustrate the riverside docks/boats of the mighty Savannah River.
I am being represented by “The Grand Bohemian Gallery, Plant Riverside.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Believing in yourself as an Artist is the most important characteristic to embody.
Trusting in my artistic voice, continuously being open to learning/growing/evolving, and listening to my intuition have been essential qualities valuable to my success as a working artist.
