Today we’d like to introduce you to Yicheng Zhang.
Yicheng, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a Chinese filmmaker currently living in Savannah, Georgia. I graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design and majored in Film&TV in the spring of 2021. Before joining SCAD, I was an assistant director and script supervisor on set in the Chinese Film industry.
Right now I’m based in savannah and doing freelance G&E and camera work. My initial reason for studying abroad was that after working in a Chinese production for a while, I felt that I still had a lot of space for improvement. At that time, I was very confused about the future and didn’t know what my future path would be.
So for the sake of my future development, I chose to apply for further study abroad by myself. On the one hand, I wanted to improve my professional skills; on the other hand, I wanted to see the outside world and learn how the mature industrial film industry works in the West. After I came to the U.S. to study, I walked into a new world and gained insight.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As a foreigner, the most difficult thing is how to communicate fluently. I don’t think I need to worry too much about this aspect, because I have been in the United States for 4 years, and I already have the communication skills required for Film Set.
Everyone I’ve worked with appreciates my work attitude and will introduce me to more jobs. I think the most important thing in the film industry is networking. If you want to be hired all the time, you have to have good relationships with people on set.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Recently I just finished a short film in savannah called Peekaboo. It is talking about the high school love story between two girls. It is in post-production now and will run for the film festival. My short Capture won the Best Thriller at Hollywood Blood Horror Festival Los Angles, Best Horror at Cannes Shorts, Offical selection at Venice shorts film festival, Best Cinematography (Secondary Category – Under 40min) at International Motion Picture Awards.
Any big plans?
I always believe that I can succeed as long as I work hard. I am still working in the film industry. In the next few years, I hope I can become a qualified cinematographer and gaffer to shine where I am needed.
