Today we’d like to introduce you to Mare O’Shea.
Hi Mare, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The members of Luminary all come from a salon and service background and work extremely well as a team as they have all worked together previously! I, Mare, have come from a fine art background and graduated from the University of North GA in 2016 with a BA in painting and sculpture. I graduated from cosmetology school in 2018 at Paul Mitchell the school in Atl. I have been working at salons since! I have been behind the chair full time now for 1.5yrs. Kate hails from upstate New York and has been behind the chair for 16 years the past two being here in Savannah! Kate loves all animals that exist and has a heart the size of Texas and a grin to match! Jordan is our go-to gal and is a jack of all trades and a master of all of them as well. She is the mastermind behind Voyuer of the Veil – an incredible collection of kink-inspired wearable body decor made from chain mail and leather.
We house this collection at Luminary and will have a rotating local artist feature each quarter! Our heart behind luminary is to maintain a safe and comfortable space that fosters creativity and self-exploration. We are big thinkers, dreamers, jokesters, lovers, buddies, and creatives! I (mare) as a trans person know personally how it feels to navigate a world not particularly fond of my existence. We wanted to make something for people like us; bi-sexual, pansexual, trans, queer, neurodivergent weirdos! All are welcome and celebrated; we mean it! Tell your mom and your favorite cousin that there is a place for them here, at Luminary.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
All three of us struggle with chronic illnesses and neurological divergence in different varieties! I (mare) have ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, hypothyroidism, and IBS. Kate has Bipolar 1 and OCD. Jordan struggles with depression and anxiety as well.
We are all open about our experiences and want to be as authentic as possible at all times! The large-scale salon life didn’t agree with any of our bodies or minds so we pulled up our britches and did the dang thing for ourselves and we couldn’t be happier!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Luminary, we specialize in custom unique hair for all humans! There is always something new and fun to be created in hair and at luminary, it is our hearts’ passion to seek out beauty in the unexpected! We are small but we are mighty in heart and in spirit!
Mare loves all hair but absolutely goes nuts for creative hair coloring and funky unique haircuts! Kate is also a master of all hair coloring techniques and a wiz with her shears! She loves colors of all kinds but also lights up for vivid creative hair color!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was very different in appearance but the same in my soul as I continue to be the happy-go-lucky smiling sunshine kid my parents raised. Yet, through the obstacles of being a trans and gay person in a religious home in the south I’ve become seasoned into the man I am today!
Kate was adopted at a young age by the two most influential people in her life. Kate was also a very happy-go-lucky and active kid who made friends with everyone she met! Her mother was her best buddy until the day she passed and Kate carries her love and joy with her each and every day.
