Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Morse.
Hi Katherine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My background in education was anthropology from Sweet Briar College and psychology from the College of Coastal Georgia, which I used to market www.mkwellingtonart.com on social media. I worked for a nonprofit in Brunswick, Georgia, where I handled marketing, including digital.
After being laid off in 2018, I went to work for a company in Jacksonville, FL. While there, I began class in a Masters of Science in Digital Marketing with Southern New Hampshire University. I was laid off for a second time due to the company’s restructuring and disbanding of the department I worked for.
So, in April 2019, I created Vixen Creative Marketing which took a hit like all other businesses in March 2020. I completed the Masters’s program in the summer of 2020 and got through the pandemic with one client I still have today. It has had its challenges, even with the economy, and it has had many learning experiences, good and bad, that I have grown from over the past couple of years.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing has been smooth, and I would not expect it to be either. The struggles of gaining and losing clients, especially being a one-woman show as a business owner. I have honed down on my capabilities and tend to work with other small business owners between the Jacksonville, FL area to Savannah, GA.
If the work is on a topic I am unfamiliar with, I am comfortable suggesting a competitor who is better suited for their needs. The pandemic was a challenge, and now the economy is a challenge because small business owners have small budgets to work on, and often, digital marketing is cut first to save money.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I studied photography at Oldfield School in Maryland under Robert Creamer during the spring semester of my senior year of high school. It was a rewarding experience that taught my patience and tested my skills to look through a camera lens and see the world differently. Yes, like many children, I did a lot of art from drawing and painting, and when I went to Sweet Briar College, I took a lot of art and photography classes. I fell in love with Visual Anthropology, taught by Dr. Claudia Chang in anthropology. I did an independent study one term doing visual anthropology of historic downtown Lynchburg, VA, before the revitalization.
When I moved to Georgia, I formed M. K. Wellington Art. I sold my mixed media, photography, and other works on weekends while working various jobs, from an archaeological field tech to the front desk at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, now Jekyll Island Club Resort. Currently, I am working as a special education teacher at Brunswick Chrisitan Academy in their Success in Academics program, teaching history, science, communication, family and consumer science, general education, and 7th-grade art.
While doing all that, I am also working on a Masters of Teaching at Georgia Southern University while running Vixen Creative Marketing which allows me to use my love of art and creativity combined with anthropology and psychology to market using mainly social media, Google, and websites.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
As technology and apps advance and the newer generation discovers themselves, I see that continued education in trends will have to be maintained. Apps we use now may fall by the wayside, and others will have to adapt, which means marketers have to be even quicker to adapt.
My parents did not grow up with technology as we have today, and I am from that generation that did not grow up with it but quickly adapted to it in my late years as a high school student in terms of the Internet.
