Meet Grant Goodwin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grant Goodwin.

Hi Grant, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had an interest in art. I grew up painting, drawing, taking photos, and just about anything else you’d think of. I never imagined that any of that would be translated into makeup. I grew up in a very old-fashioned household as well as a very southern town.

Boys wearing makeup or showing any sort of “gender fluidity” was not spoken of or accepted, so I had a mindset that doing it would make me more feminine, but now, as a boy who wears makeup, I realize that it is not about gender, it does not define femininity, but it makes me an artist which is what I have always strived to be!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Other than the struggles I previously mentioned, I would say that building a platform as a content creator comes with its own obstacles. It is more than just putting makeup on and taking photos and hitting posts. It comes with learning how algorithms are constantly changing and finding ways to get yourself onto people’s feeds.

It is speaking with brands about rates and payments. Rejecting, or getting rejected for offers because you know you’re worth and deserve nothing less than that! It is such a saturated community, but I’ve slowly grown to learn that there is room for everyone.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in beauty content creation. What started as me posting photos of myself in makeup has grown into making reviews of different products, sharing tips and tricks that I have learned along the way, and overall trying to create a community where everyone feels welcome in my space. I am most proud of working with brands that I would have never imagined reaching out to me.

I think what sets me apart from others, especially when it comes to makeup reviews, is that I am not going to be overly dramatic or animated when testing a product. I give a real, genuine reaction and if it works, I explain what’s good about it and why I like it.

I’ve noticed that so many creators create “click bait” and have videos full of dramatic gasps, yelling about how good it is. I think if that works for them, then that’s amazing! But I want people that watch my videos to feel like they are hanging out with a friend on facetime!

What matters most to you? Why?
I think creating content that is inclusive and diverse to make everyone feel like they can come to me for a good review or recommendation is most important to me. I want my audience to trust my opinions, and if they don’t, we have enough respect for each other to discuss our differences.

And when I say diverse, I think some of that can extend from calling out brands that are not inclusive, or claiming that something is when it clearly isn’t. I want to be completely transparent and open when it comes to things like this.
