Meet Sarah Wright of House of Wright Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Wright.

Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Since I was young, I knew that I would be a creative professional. I spent all my free time at school in the art room drawing, painting, or throwing clay. I attended Columbus College of Art & Design on scholarship, majoring in Advertising & Graphic Design.

Graduating in 2008 was not ideal. When many junior designers were being let go during the economic downturn, I made the decision to move to Asia and pursue my dream in the design field. In Shanghai, I began working for a Dutch promotional product brand, XD Design, where I gained experience in packaging design, product development, photo art direction, print production, and marketing collateral design. The experience gained and the variety of projects I touched in my first few years set me up to be a nimble designer.

After 6 years in Shanghai, my husband and our first daughter moved to the U.K. We had our second daughter, and I took a step back from designing while I raised two little ones. I found creative outlets by organizing the kids’ crafts during community playgroup and working part-time designing for the district council.

After 5 wonderful years living in the English Countryside, we found ourselves in Bluffton, South Carolina. This is where my dream of starting my own design business came to life. With years of global experience under my belt, I was ready to take the plunge! I now enjoy working with local clients such as Spartina 449 and Interluxe Group. I have also helped small businesses from around the U.S. come to life visually by designing full brand systems, logos, websites, social media graphics, marketing collateral, email marketing, digital advertising, and much more.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle has been getting out of my own way! There is a lot of fear in trying something new, and there are no guarantees when working for yourself. But I have built a reputation for being a marketing-minded designer who can deliver quality work within tight deadlines. This reputation means that the work continues to flow my way!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
House of Wright Design Co. believes that beautiful design is not enough – it isn’t successful until it helps reach business goals. When a beautiful design meets its purpose, a business-driven and ultimately successful solution is created.

House of Wright Design Co. is able to define and implement a creative vision with solutions that are both beautiful and result driven, specializing in visual branding, logo design, digital advertising, print design, photo/video storyboarding and art direction, presentation design, website graphics, and more.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to give gratitude and grace.

Gratitude for the fact that my passion has become my career and that it affords me the flexibility to balance work and family life.

Grace for the fact I am growing and evolving. As an ambitious person, I want to take on all the big clients and exciting design projects, but it’s important to nurture the early stages of my business. I must maintain the reputation I’ve worked so hard to gain by continuing to deliver high-quality work and not over-committing myself.
