Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Brown.
Hi Nia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been braiding hair since high school. A year after I graduated from Savannah State University (2018), I started working at a small staffing agency; I got pregnant shortly after and was Laid-off due to me having Hyperemesis gravidarum and being in and out of the hospital. Once they laid me off, I began to take an interest in hair again! I started by selling bundles (and lip gloss) both did really well, but I wasn’t fulfilled. I did my hair in braids and posted pictures on Instagram; from there I got my first REAL client (aside from friends, family, and colleagues). After that first client, it was UP from there. I went from working in my living room to turning a shed into shop, working in a salon & NOW I have my very own Salon Suite in a Professional building, and my clientele is growing constantly.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey hasn’t been the easiest, especially since I started while I pregnant. It was a struggle being on my feet for hours while having a big belly! I had no idea I would even continue braiding after I had my baby. I’ve also moved around a lot in the past few years, so staying consistent has been hard, but I’ve made it work to my advantage.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Professional Braider. I specialize in Knotless braids, but I also offer Stitch Braids, Soft Locs, and Traditional Box Braids. I am most known for my NEAT braids and parts. I am proud of my consistency and growth. I think what sets me apart from others is my ambition; I do my very best on every client. I offer a safe, clean, peaceful environment, snacks; I’m always on time and prepared, I provide hair for all styles, and my prices are affordable!
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’ve recently started back reading. A few of my favorites are “Healing the Wounds of the Past” by TD Jakes, “The 48 Laws of Power” by Robert Greene, and “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” by Inter Burnett-Zeigler.
