Hidden Gems: Meet Dawn Morgan of Collins Construction Serv

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Morgan.

Hi Dawn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Savannah. After obtaining my degree in Business Management, I worked as a Business Analyst in Atlanta. My father approached me to come home and work for his construction company, Collins Construction Services, Inc. I joined the firm in 2006 and learned everything about the business literally from the ground up. I was an estimator/project manager until the downturn of the economy in 2010. At that point, my father decided to retire, and I bought him out making Collins a 100% Women-owned Construction Firm. I am a licensed General Contractor in Georgia and North & South Carolina.

In 2020, during COVID, although we were considered essential workers and never shut down, there weren’t as many meetings or new projects, so I decided to get my Real Estate license as well. I am a licensed agent in both Georgia and South Carolina for Realty One Group Inclusion.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha! Definitely not a smooth road. Purchasing the company in the middle of a recession was terrifying. We had 5 employees when I started and worked our way up to over 20. Being a woman in a male-dominated industry in a small town like Savannah is not easy. I am often underestimated & not given the opportunity to even participate in some projects. Many thought I was only capable of handling small renovations or build-outs. It took a lot of persistence and involvement in governmental set-aside programs for women & “disadvantaged” businesses to build my capital and resume for larger projects.

We’ve been impressed with Collins Construction Serv, Inc, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Collins was founded in 1992. I purchased the business in 2010 making it a 100% Women Owned Business. We specialize in Design-Build and all facets of Construction– new/ground-up, renovation, additions – for any commercial or industrial applications. We currently work across Georgia and South Carolina. We primarily perform commercial & industrial projects for the military, local government, and private entities. Collins has performed projects such as hotels, hospitals, schools, Ga Ports Authority, Renovation of the Chatham Co Courthouse, Chatham Co Detention Center & K9 facility. We are currently working on the Security Checkpoint expansion at the Savannah/HH Intl Airport and many projects at military installations around the Southeast.

Our attention to detail, experience, and communication set us apart. We are very responsive and solution-oriented and have been able to earn our clients’ trust, resulting in repeat projects for the same customers.

I also sell real estate in Savannah, Bluffton & Hilton Head – focusing on luxury communities and assisting with land deals for our developers.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
I was honored to be a Chatelaine, a member of the drill team at Windsor Forest High School. The football games, half-time shows, and marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade was a legacy I am proud to have been a part of.
