Life & Work with Bec Gombar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bec Gombar.

Hi Bec, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began dancing at the age of 3, in Vancouver, Canada, with a creative movement-style ballet class. As I grew up, I started dancing more intensely and had to let go of other hobbies, such as gymnastics and soccer. It grew apparent that I wanted to make dance my career and move to a big city to make it possible. Shortly after graduating high school, I moved to New York City to pursue my dreams. I enrolled in the rigorous 2-year Certificate Program at Peridance Center, and upon graduation from the program, I embarked on my professional career as a dancer. I have surpassed my goals of where I would be in this stage of life and am constantly inspired by the art form.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am very lucky that my path hasn’t been too bumpy. Growing up as a competitive dancer, I established many connections within the dance world that paved the road for my professional career to come to fruition. I was given opportunities early on that I am so grateful for! That being said, dance is a competitive field, and it hasn’t always been easy to find fulfillment. Moving away from home at a young age came with copious challenges. The process of creating a life for myself far from family and familiarity whilst navigating the professional dance world to establish my career has been extremely difficult. Often times, there are hundreds of dancers in search of a job seeking one person- which was once a completely foreign experience. I have grown immensely in navigating the industry by transforming every opportunity into growth. This has allowed me to become accomplished within the field.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have danced with multiple dance companies within New York City. Within the companies, I work with world-renowned choreographers to create dance pieces that bring their visions to life and rehearse for performances that premier on stages across the city for wide audiences. I am trained in styles of dance such as: ballet, jazz, contemporary, modern, musical theater, and tap, and utilize many of them within the work of the companies I dance for. I would say that my speciality lies is contemporary dance, and I train by taking ballet classes daily to refine my technique. I have performed pieces that have gone on to be widely recognized and for famous choreographers such as: Igal Perry, Nicholas Palmquist, johannes wieland, Robert Battle, Stacey Tookey, Ido Tadmor, Steven Blandino, Alexander Anderson, and many more. To work with many renowned artists sets me apart from others as it is rare to gain opportunities like these in such a competitive field. I am grateful that my experience in each and every creative process has been fulfilling and positive, and I am very proud of how far I have come since I began my journey in New York.

What matters most to you? Why?
Staying true to myself and balance are very important to me. I believe they allow me to maintain fulfillment and a positive outlook.
