Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaac King.
Hi Isaac, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Even since childhood, my life has always been encircled by a rich tradition of storytelling and storytellers. My dad is a journalist, so I was essentially molded into a storyteller from a young age. I come from a family with deep roots in the American South, and with that comes a plethora of stories of characters in the family. Hearing these stories produced in me a deep love and curiosity for the region in which I grew up. I continue to be fascinated with the South and Southern life.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I consider myself very fortunate that I have had a strong foundation of familial love and support for myself and my endeavors. Even when my family has not particularly understood my direction in the film world, they have supported me. That being said, my work does come with its challenges. The realm of experimental film is niche and sometimes inaccessible, so I have had difficulty acquiring institutional support. This field is considerably riskier than even conventional film. People outside the vanguard art sphere have a more challenging time understanding my methodology and are more hesitant to offer support. One of my goals is to make these more out-there modes of filmmaking more accessible.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a visual media practitioner and filmmaker from upstate South Carolina. Coming from an experimental film background, I am interested in utilizing image-making and experiential art to inspire, raise questions, and promote virtue in others. My work and research have included and focused on matters of representation and socio-ecological metamorphosis, particularly in the American South. Though I often deal with abstruse philosophical concepts, I hope my work also seems playful and rejuvenating. I believe that it is through play and experimentation that one can gain transcendent insight, push boundaries, and bridge divides. With this in mind, I strive to create hybrid audio-visual works that blur the line between reality and the invented to promote revelation and transformation.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
People that know me and my fascination with Southern identity and representation may find it hard to believe that I wasn’t always this cognizant of my identity or convictions. I am thankful that my college years have allowed me to hone my craft and establish robust collaborative friendships with many talented artists and makers. Being someone in their early twenties that grapples with intense questions like “Who am I,” or “What can I do to better the world around me,” I am thankful that my artistic endeavors, such as my thesis film, have allowed me to explore self and my relationship to the world around me.
