Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Lancaster.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always loved doing hair and makeup since I was little. It started with dance having to do my makeup and hair for recitals. That grew to cutting and coloring my own hair and all of my friend’s hair. I decided to go to cosmetology school to pursue my dream of making people look and feel beautiful. I went to Alexander Paul in Greenville NC, graduated top of my class, and never looked back. From there, I started in the number one salon in Raleigh, NC, completing an apprenticeship and building my clientele. I discovered how hard it is to give a luxury and meaningful experience in a big salon environment, so I made the very scary leap of faith and went out on my own and opened my own salon in 2019. I left NC and all the amazing connections I had made to be closer to my family who all live in the Savannah area. I recently opened Spellbound Salon Studio in the Starland District to bring Savannah, a luxury salon experience where you are the focus! I want to create a safe space for anyone to come in and get refreshed and recharged all while bringing out their own individual beauty!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening Spellbound was an easy decision, but there were hiccups with licensing taking forever (a month and a half to be exact), all while being unemployed. It was also a struggle to get everything into the salon like furniture, light fixtures, all the products and color, etc., all by myself. When I say there was blood, sweat, and tears that went into the creation of my sanctuary, I mean it.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an alternative stylist, meaning I specialize in not your everyday cuts and colors that aren’t for the faint if heart! My specialties include Vivid haircolors, blonding, and extensions. I am a Pulp Riot educator and get to travel the country teaching everything color. I am also a Pravana Balayage Certified stylist, trained in 12 color lines, as well as well versed in razor cutting and Deva and Sexy Hair cutting techniques.
Spellbound is unique because I pride myself in creating an inviting and inclusive environment for any and all who sit in my chair. You will never feel judged or out of place, and you will never feel like a number. My clients become a part of my family. We will laugh together, we will cry together, we will share our lives with each other over the years. That is what’s important to me.
Spellbound is a registered safe space salon with strands for trans and will soon be adding Crystal healing to every service to rejuvenate you from your head to your soul!
What does success mean to you?
Most people define success as having the million-dollar house, the big boat, and the Ferrari in the driveway, but to me, I define success as being happy, truly happy. I talk to people all day, and some are very successful in their careers, but they are unhappy. If I can go home at the end of the day, having stood on my feet for 8+ hours with no lunch break or bathroom breaks, and say I love my career, I love the bonds I have made, the lives I have touched and I am so happy that this is my life, then I think I have reached success.
