Rising Stars: Meet Van Bruckner of The Starland District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Van Bruckner.

Van Bruckner

Hi Van, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved around a lot as a kid and that trained me to notice how different people interact with one another, differing social hierarchies, cultural vernacular, and how people carry themselves based on these things. I think with a trained eye, these things can be very visually interesting. This is why photography piqued my interest; it allows me to translate an abstract creative vision into a tangible framework. Continuously on the lookout for the perfect moment, I find that the camera becomes a tool for my subconscious to take the reins.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I’m still paving a way to make a living off this, selling myself has been the most difficult part. I’m very much of the mindset of letting the art speak for itself, but that’s not so engaging in today’s market of self-documentation. As a modern photographer, you’re obligated to film yourself taking a photo with a voiceover explaining why and how you took the photo for people to even give you a second glance, which seems counter-intuitive to me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer specializing in street/candid work, whatever words you want to use. I’m known for always having a camera on my wrist wherever I go and being asked, “Why did you take a picture of that?”. I’m proud of the relationship I’ve built within the local community and always feel that someone has my back. I think my overtaking obsession with creating the perfect image keeps me motivated to be mentioned in the likes of other renowned photographers, such as Garry Winogrand, Abbas Attar, and Gordon Parks.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I honestly have no idea; I just like taking pictures.
