Rising Stars: Meet Beneath Trees

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beneath Trees.

Beneath Trees

Hi Beneath Trees, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
We (Genevieve and Hemmy) started playing music together in 2013 as a garage punk duo in New Jersey. We moved down to Savannah later that year and began playing frequently at house venues and bars like Hangfire before taking a hiatus for a few years. When we started playing again, we played Beneath Trees shows as well as an indie folk duo called Genevieve & Hemmey.

We traveled the country from 2017-2019 playing in most of the lower 48 and eastern Canada. After moving to Colorado in 2021, we started Beneath Trees back up and played in Fort Collins, CO, and toured the southern states from New Mexico to Georgia. Since moving back to Savannah in 2022, we have recorded a 4 song EP called Grow The Garden, toured the East Coast and played shows all over town.

Music has been a core foundation of who we are individually and as a couple. It fueled our travels while being full-time on the road and continues to be a main outlet for our creativity and helped us build an awesome community of friends here.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Relatively, it’s been a smooth road for us. Some challenges for us included: Not having a home base to practice, record, and build a fanbase while we were traveling full-time. Fluctuations in the music scene for our type of loud, garage punk. Booking and funding tours.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We make garage psych punk music as a two-piece. We specialize in filling out a much wider sound space than most people would expect from a guitar and drums. We are known for high-energy sets that get people moving. We are most proud of how many amazing places we’ve been able to play in the country and also still have people get so excited about our music after all these years.

What sets us apart from others is the somewhat unique perspective that extensive DIY touring has awarded us. Playing with so many different artists in so many places has influenced our style and perspective in both how we approach shows and connect with musicians and fans. We do our best to really just hang out with people and keep a pretty down-to-earth mentality.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid definitely brought a screeching halt to live music. It did allow us time to play and write music without expectations for when we would ever play it out.
