Exploring Life & Business with Grey Scott of Never Not Goth

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Grey Scott.

Grey Scott

Hi Grey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Never Not Goth started as an offshoot of Ryan Graveface’s record label, Graveface Records. Ryan launched the label in 2018 to showcase emerging goth talent. The new label began a monthly goth night to showcase these artists and celebrate all goth music, new and old.

In 2021, Ryan joined forces with me (Grey Scott) to rebuild the events after their covid hiatus and open a brick and mortar goth shop. I had recently moved to Savannah, GA from Brooklyn, NY where I had studied Fashion Design and spent every spare moment at any goth nights I could find.

My knowledge of fashion, love of all things goth, and years of retail experience gave me the tools I needed to launch the shop.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been the easiest endeavor. I had to rebuild the monthly goth night in a world where people were feeling rightfully very wary of going out and being in crowds. We also had to relocate the event after our original host venue had closed due to the pandemic. It was definitely an uphill battle, but now the events are a staple in our goth scene, and we tend to regularly hit max capacity at our new venue, The Lodge of Sorrows.

The shop has also had its fair share of trial and error. Our first shop opened in Starland, around the corner from Graveface Records. Space was very limited, and the general crowd of the neighborhood didn’t always love our inventory. We then opened a second location in the Oglethorpe Mall, and while this location is less than 10 minutes from the first shop, it’s an entirely different beast.

Our space there is about twice as big as our Starland shop and it brings in a crowd that is really ready to shop. Exactly one year after we open the first shop in Starland we closed up shop there and made our mall location our sole operation. It was a hard decision to make but ultimately it has proven to be a good one. Now both the shop and the events are thriving and they really work together beautifully.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Never Not Goth is constantly growing and evolving. I do my best to serve all members of our local goth community. I’m proud to be able to provide a wide range of clothing for infants, children, and adults with a well-stocked plus-size section.

We also stock spooky home decor and books on some great goth musicians. Savannah, GA is home to a really great and diverse alternative community and we like to think we have something in stock for everyone so long as you appreciate the darker things in life.

What does success mean to you?
I DJ most of our events, and standing on a stage playing goth music to a packed room of people dancing and wearing clothing or accessories from my shop feels like a dream. I still have some lofty goals for Never Not Goth but I’m so proud of where we are and all the hard work that got us here.
