Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Janelle Patterson of Oshun Health and Wellness

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Janelle Patterson.

Dr. Janelle Patterson

Hi Dr. Patterson, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am from sunny south Florida – Pompano Beach. I received my doctorate in physical therapy from FAMU in 2022. Where I met my husband and co-founder of Oshun Health and Wellness. Toward the end of my matriculation, I started to think about what I wanted to specialize in after graduation.

A professor of mine was previously a Pelvic Floor PT, and she spoke about the types of patients she used to treat. All of the things pelvic-related that women were told were normal, I now was finding out were not. Peeing when you cough/sneeze/laugh, pain during pregnancy, pain with intercourse, constipation, not being able to hold your pee – things are all things that many women deal with. I knew I wanted to to be in this field, I wanted to make an actual difference! I wanted women to know that there is a solution! I also wanted to positively impact and change the birthing experience; black women are 3x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes.

After working with numerous patients, I noticed that many clients faced barriers to receiving care. That is where the idea for Oshun Health and Wellness mobile and virtual services was born. OHW brings services to you! We eliminate barriers to care, such as difficulties with insurance, transportation, finding child care, and more. I have a strong passion for pelvic floor PT and continue to be inspired by the positive changes my patients undergo after treatment- including the elimination of chronic conditions, improving pelvic floor strength, eliminating bladder and bowel problems, improvement sex life, and all-around helping clients improve their bladder, bowel, and sexual function that many of them thought would be lifelong deficits. At Oshun Health and Wellness, we get results, eliminate problems, and improve quality of life!

I absolutely LOVE my career!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road! Many companies do not hire new grads for specialty positions such as Pelvic Floor physical therapy. I had to begin taking pelvic floor certification courses while still in school to ensure I landed a job after graduation.

These courses were expensive as they were meant for already established PTs – I had to work extra hard, doing grocery delivery and driving Lyft to raise funds, all while being a full-time student. It was all worth it! My first job out of school was a Pelvic PT position, and I have not looked back since. It is because of that sacrifice that I was able to start my own Pelvic PT practice and help even more women and men in need!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Oshun Health and Wellness, LLC is a Pelvic floor physical therapy practice that provides mobile and virtual services. We serve Savannah, Georgia, and Vidalia, Georgia. Mobile service means we go to our clients’ homes to provide PT services, bringing all necessary equipment. Virtual service means we treat clients online through a telehealth webcam. We have a clinic in Vidalia, Georgia.

I am known as the Pee, Poop, and sex doctor! I treat clients who deal with bowel, bladder, sex, pregnancy, and postpartum issues. Such as urinary incontinence- cough/sneeze, on the way to the bathroom, with exercise and running, and more!

  • Urinary frequency – Peeing frequently, unable to hold urine
  • Constipation
  • Pregnancy-related back pain, pelvic pain
  • Postpartum recovery: Return to fitness, eliminate pain
  • Pre-natal care/ birth preparation
  • Pain – With intercourse, Vaginal pain, Pelvic pain

My clients come to me often as their last hope, their physicians do not provide many solutions- they were either offered medication or surgery. They want a holistic option that can eliminate their symptoms! Medication and surgery are band-aid options, not fixing the real problem. Pelvic PT is a whole-body approach. My clients come to me wanting to fix one problem, and we improve multiple aspects of their pelvic health. I spend a lot of time talking and connecting with my clients. It is my duty to ensure they are comfortable and satisfied. They lead the charge in their care, and I give them the tools necessary to get better.

Please let readers know:

– We offer a FREE 15-minute phone consultation for you to ask questions, talk about your symptoms, what your goals are, and if we can help you! You can find out if Pelvic PT is right for you free of charge.

– Pelvic PT is NOT about Kegels.

– You do not have to undergo an internal exam if you do not want to (we can still fix your problem); we work at the pace the client is comfortable with.

– Nothing is embarrassing in Pelvic PT – this is a judgment-free zone.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is fishing with my grandfather in the Everglades. We would bring chairs and sit out there all day, catching different types of fish. The sun was out, and the air crisp. I still fish and keep him in mind every time.
