Today, we’d like to introduce you to Joselyn Leon.
Hi Joselyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hi! I’m Joselyn Leon!! But you might know me by Joselyn Marie! When I was in high school, I started a YouTube channel and immediately felt connected to creating content through a lens. I love the craft of shaping a story, skit, or 5-second cinematic reel from start to finish.
I attend SCAD, majoring in Film and TV with a double minor in Producing for Film and Business entrepreneurship. I originally went for editing, but about halfway through my college career, I fell in love with producing. Producing is the backbone of all films—everything budgeting, fundraising, contracts, gathering cast and crew—is my job, and I love it!!
Not only is my film career important to me, but above all – my faith is important. Through the past few years, I have gone through ups and downs, but trusting God and His plans for me and my life have kept me motivated to push through.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It hasn’t been easy, mostly because the plans I had thought would work out didn’t, but that’s okay because I have better now!!
This is where my relationship with God becomes visibly present in my life. A season I am currently walking through right now is the whole post-college life. I had an idea of my plans for my life, but God’s plans > mine. I’m excited, nervous, and eager to see what’s to come!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently produce a film! I am really into documentary films – because you can share an interesting story and often bring awareness to what’s happening in the world around us.
For my senior thesis, I produced a short documentary, “Secrets of Satellite Beach,” directed by Megan Mullen (another SCAD film student). In this documentary, we tackle the waste burial in the 1970s at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida and how that affected everyone in the area.
I love to take part in creating content that drives change in the world. I think that’s very important- especially since there is so much content being created in this generation.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
When I was in college freshman year – I was still at home in Myrtle Beach, SC, because it was COVID year (yay to online classes). I got the opportunity to work with some awesome brands doing side work projects/freelance! Some of the companies I worked with include Pura Vida, HWLF/WWJD, and Teleties, and I also did some local work with churches in the area!
I’ve been doing these little brand deals through YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram for years now, and yes, it’s cool to get free things, etc., but it’s also nice to work on my communication skills with bigger brands. I’ve made awesome connections throughout the year, and I can’t wait to further them!
