Today, we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Greenwood.
Hi Nikki, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I first visited Savannah to plan a destination wedding downtown in April 2018. My husband and I fell in love with the city’s history and gardens and decided to move here shortly after.
We bought a house sight unseen in August 2018. We were fortunate to discover a fabulous group of neighbors in our Ardsley Park neighborhood, including the former owner of Savannah Window Fashions, Jeanne Dunn. I purchased Savannah Window Fashions in 2020 from Jeanne, leaving behind corporate life and a career in advertising.
My previous career experience proved particularly helpful in transitioning to small business ownership. Advertising, project management, content creation, website development, floral design, non-profit economic development, event planning, and property management experience have all contributed to my success as an entrepreneur.
I’m thrilled to take Savannah Window Fashions forward as the new owner. It was an unlikely career change, but perfect in so many ways. I have always had a deep and abiding love for homes. Coming from five generations of builders and carpenters, I spent a lot of time on job sites, gaining a thorough understanding of the value attention to detail and a commitment to quality craftsmanship bring to a successful build.
I truly adore Savannah, and my greatest desire is to build a business that contributes to the community by helping interior designers in the amazing work they do, providing the highest quality custom window treatments for our local historic homes and properties, and working with clients to make their homes more beautiful and functional. I am passionate about preserving the great skill and craft that goes into fabricating custom window treatments. I hope to pass the knowledge on from my current team to a new generation of seamstresses and seamsters.
When not living and breathing window treatments, I love exploring downtown and surrounding areas, gardening, reading, hosting, visiting family and friends, and spending time with our animals. Our dog, Gatsby, is the official shop pup and loves coming to work with me. We also have three indoor cats, two porch cats, and two turtles. I’m passionate about building community and getting to know other local small business owners. We live in an amazing city full of interesting people doing fabulous things.
My husband, Ryan, works at Georgia Ports, and we enjoy bike rides, spending time with friends and neighbors, beach days at Tybee, and exploring Savannah. My daughter, Zoe Greenwood, is a full-time student at Georgia Southern Armstrong Campus, studying Political Science. Zoe also helps out part-time at the family business. Ryan has a daughter who attends Ohio State University and a son who lives in Dayton, Ohio.
I’m also a member of the Ardsley Park Chatham Crescent Garden Club and enjoy volunteering at and attending the home and garden tours put on by local clubs.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Buying a business in the middle of COVID was difficult, from securing funding to navigating in-home design visits with health and safety in mind. Not to mention learning an entirely new industry!
The former owner stayed on for a bit to show me the ropes. Then, I started the hard work of ensuring the business was positioned for financial growth by developing processes and procedures, implementing digital tools, building a project management system, and thoroughly understanding the financial side of things.
I’m now facing the challenge of expanding my team in a shortage of skilled trades, including fabrication and technical expertise.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
