Today we’d like to introduce you to Marley Goldin.
Hi Marley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
When I got furloughed from my job during COVID, I knew I needed a creative outlet; I come from a long line of restauranteurs, caterers, and home cooks on both sides of my family, and cooking has long been my family’s love language. It only felt natural to start sharing my recipes and kitchen experiments online. But what began as a hobby quickly turned into a full-blown business. The more I shared, the more I realized my passion for cooking and creating in the kitchen, photographing the food, and teaching people how to gain confidence. Now, 4 years later, my husband and I are working full-time on Marley’s Menu, pouring so much love into this family business that helps us connect with others through food.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business from scratch in an industry I knew nothing about was undoubtedly a risk. With every day and every misstep, I learn so much! I’ve not only learned an immense amount about cooking, recipe writing, photography, videography, search engine optimization, social media, and community fostering, but I’ve also had to learn how to have an entrepreneurial mindset and stay focused and motivated. I’ve learned to celebrate the small wins and to view the challenges as opportunities for growth, which I’ve come to believe is the make or break to success in this volatile and unpredictable environment of online businesses.
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
Marley’s Menu is a collection of approachable and fun recipes focusing on simple ingredients with bold flavor. I follow a pescatarian diet and especially love sharing delicious seafood recipes and joyful baking recipes. Through these recipes, I can use my educational background in environmental health science to teach my readers about the positive impact they can make in their kitchen, whether through sustainable cooking techniques, responsibly sourced ingredients, or avoiding food waste. Above all, I create to remind people that cooking doesn’t have to be a chore. It can be a creative outlet, a way to show love and a tool to make more sustainable choices.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Since starting Marley’s Menu, I have learned again and again that my success hinges on having a solid understanding of why I am pursuing this in the first place. Every decision you make in your business should return to that “why.” A strong knowledge of this will help guide you in decision-making and keep you grounded and motivated throughout your journey.
