Conversations with Jasmine J-Su

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine J-Su.

Jasmine J-Su

Jasmine, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Since my earliest memories, storytelling and its manifestation on screen have held an irresistible allure for me. Whether through the modest confines of my home television or the grand spectacle of the cinema, I’ve been captivated by the ability to immerse myself in worlds crafted purely from imagination.

Throughout my journey, even before I comprehended its trajectory, I found myself instinctively documenting life’s milestones, both mine and others, through the lens of a camera. It began with the tactile joy of capturing moments with disposable cameras, evolving as I graduated to a home video camera and camera phone. Yet, it wasn’t until later, amidst my college years, pursuing Communication with a focus on Radio/TV, that the seeds of professional videography, filmmaking, and editing were replanted in my mind.

Following a stint in a call center, where I toiled for four years as a customer service agent, I found myself drained and yearning for more fulfilling pursuits. It was during this period of reflection that I turned to prayer, seeking clarity on my true purpose. In a moment of divine revelation, I recognized that my calling had been waiting for me all along.

Fast forward to the present day, and I find myself immersed in the vibrant world of filmmaking. From the electric atmosphere of movie sets alongside A-list actors to the intimacy of independent film projects, I’ve experienced a kaleidoscope of experiences. Currently, I serve as a videographer and editor at the Beale Street Blues Company, all while nurturing my own independent short film projects and more.

The path to this moment has been paved with countless intricacies and lessons, each one shaping me into the filmmaker I am today. Someday, the world will hear the full story of how these pieces fell into place, leading me to where I stand today until then I am deeply humbled.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Truth be told, it’s the struggles we face that sculpt us into who we become and propel us forward. Along my journey, I’ve grappled with the challenge of fellow creators appropriating my ideas, and reshaping them as their own. There have been instances where I’ve painstakingly edited videos, only for others to seize the final product and mold it to their liking without so much as a word of consultation. Similarly, in the realm of music videos, I’ve encountered situations where individuals overstepped their bounds, attempting to dictate the direction of talent or the creative process and so on.

Yet, through these trials, I’ve forged resilience and character. Initially, my efforts weren’t always taken seriously, but as the fruits of my labor began to materialize, perceptions shifted. It’s a testament to the notion that true recognition often follows diligent, earnest work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Among the various roles I inhabit, I consider myself primarily a videographer, filmmaker, and editor. One project that stands out as a source of immense pride for me is a short film titled “Okay That’s It!,” which I collaborated on with my children. This endeavor was deeply inspired by Satyajit Ray’s poignant short film, “Two.” Witnessing Ray’s ability to craft a captivating narrative devoid of dialogue, especially with children as the focal point, ignited a creative spark within me.

Inspired by Ray’s mastery, I embarked on a journey to create my own narrative, relying on the power of emotions and facial expressions to convey the story. “Okay, That’s it!” became a testament to the profound impact that simplicity and raw human connection can have in storytelling.

What makes me stand out is my fervent dedication to exploring the works of historical giants. I dive into study not to copy, but to innovate, carving out new avenues of expression. I revel in breaking free from societal norms, leading the charge in crafting original narratives. Every video I produce, whether through filming, directing, or editing, tells a unique story that deeply connects with and inspires the audience.
