Today we’d like to introduce you to Lupita Gutiérrez
Hi Lupita, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been in love with reading and writing since I was a child. My neighborhood wasn’t considered “safe” for children to be outside without someone watching over them. Both of my parents work all day, so me and my sisters stayed at home after school. Watching TV was fun, but not as fun as reading, writing or drawing. I have been compelled to be creative since then.
As I grew up, my mom told me I should pursue a career as an engineer and not as an artist and I listened to her. I am a biotechnology engineer and I have a master degree in science, but my love for reading and writing never fade away. When I moved to the USA from Mexico with my husband, I decided to pursue my true passion: share my love for books, create digital content about it and write.
I share my opinion about books and relevant topics in the industry on Instagram, tiktok, in my podcast (traguitos literarios) and in my weekly column in Bicaalú magazine. I have been able to work closely with authors and editors whose work I admire and I have learned from them. I can hardly wait to share the novel I’m writing with the world.
I share snippets of that story on social media and I also post frequently about the books I’m reading, book reviews and book recommendations. My Instagram and TikTok (@loslibrosdelupita) are both in Spanish and English.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Pursuing a writing career –or any artistry career– it’s never easy. Sometimes you don’t have the support in your life to make that jump. I was fortunate to find it at the right time. Although, imposter syndrome hits often or the people around you sometimes can be hurtful with their opinions, even if they have good intentions. The publishing industry its been known to have a bias for certain profiles in authors and I’m not in that category (I’m mexican born, a woman and i’m writing female centered stories in a genre known to be male dominated). Sometimes it’s hard to imagine I can make it, but I will persist.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m currently writing for a digital magazine where I can share my love for books, science and arts, and I’m working on my first manuscript: a gothic tale about two estranged sisters that mourn the loss of their mother while fighting the house that consumed her life.
I use my presence on social media to share my progress with that story and my love for books. I share book reviews and book recommendations on Instagram and TikTok (@loslibrosdelupita) in Spanish and English.
I host a monthly online book club and I have a podcast with two of my friends, we talk about books and the publishing industry.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Pivoting a career in industry for a career in arts or as a digital creator is the biggest risk I’ve taken in my life. And so far it’s been worth it. I just couldn’t bear the recurring thought of “what if”.
