Today we’d like to introduce you to JOSEPH LAYDEN
Hi JOSEPH, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in the old Candler Hospital in downtown Savannah and grew up with the history and folklore of the city. I was served my first cocktail by a character from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil in a legendary club called Hard Hearted Hannah’s, next to where Vinnie Van Go’s in City Market is now. Over the years I’ve worked as a musician and bartender at many of the historic and haunted bars and restaurants in Savannah. When the ghost of Brute Bailey scared the owners out of Isaac’s on Drayton where I worked as a bartender I became a tour guide. For the last 12 years I’ve conducted thousands of tours for Hearse Ghost Tours, Creepy Crawl, and others. Captain Stoner’s Dive Bar Crawl was launched in 2019 for a unique experience in Savannah nightlife..
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our first year was tough because we started right when tours began operating again after covid, and as a new company the hardest part was getting the word out there. But Hearse Ghost Tours and the local venues have been wonderfully supportive and the tours we offer are becoming very popular.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a historic and speculative fiction author I never tire of researching the history of the Lowcountry and evidence of the paranormal, and a professional singer/guitarist and career tour guide I know how to entertain my guests. My tours are social so that guests get to meet new people and get a taste of the authentic local life.
