Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Marie Johnson
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My passion for photography started at a young age. As a teenager, I was fascinated with black-and-white photography, so much so that I plastered my walls with photos from W Magazine. Alongside this, I was experimenting with fashion and makeup, which naturally led me to start playing with a camera in high school.
At one point, I thought I would pursue a career in makeup. However, after moving from Wisconsin to Minneapolis, my path took an unexpected turn. There, I met and worked for a well-known photographer from the 80s in New York. While I was initially working with him doing makeup, he handed me the camera one day and said, “You shoot this.” That moment was pivotal; I realized photography was in my blood.
Since Minneapolis didn’t have a thriving fashion scene, I shifted to wedding photography. Over the years, I have photographed over 200 weddings, honing my skills and discovering my love for capturing people, children, and animals. My approach blends lifestyle and photojournalistic styles, creating authentic, memorable images.
My recent move to Charleston, South Carolina, has sparked a new creative passion—exploring the world of fine art photography. This beautiful city has provided a stunning backdrop for my work and wonderful opportunities for collaboration with talented friends in film and photography. Together, we create inspiring projects that push the boundaries of creativity.
Looking ahead, I have numerous plans and goals involving creative events and fine art projects. I’m excited about the future and eager to continue working on inspiring projects and collaborating with others in the industry. I am selective about the projects I undertake, ensuring they are worthy of my time and ambition, and I am honored when my work is sought after for its unique vision and artistry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has had its challenges. One of the most significant hurdles was the transition from film to digital photography. I had a deep love for film and when the industry started shifting, I struggled to embrace digital. It felt like a loss, almost like a part of me was fading away. The early digital quality didn’t match the richness of film, and this caused me to lose some of my passion.
During that time, I felt creatively blocked and directionless, almost like experiencing writer’s block. I put my camera down and explored other ventures, trying to find my way. It was a period of feeling lost and uncertain about the future.
However, with time, I slowly found my way back to photography. Embracing the digital era was a gradual process, but it led me to discover new creative possibilities. It was a challenging journey, but one that ultimately reignited my passion and opened up new avenues for my work. I hope I can inspire others to not give up.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a photographer whose passion encompasses weddings, events, portraits, photojournalism, and most recently, fine art photography. My work is often described as magical, ethereal, and surreal. I strive to capture the essence of natural surroundings with soft, mystical, and timeless light. I enjoy weaving props into my shoots, adding layers of whimsy and depth to the stories I tell through my lens.
One of the aspects I’m most proud of is the deep connections I’ve built with my clients. My extensive experience in wedding photography has allowed me to be part of countless special moments, each a unique story etched in my heart. These connections and the joy they bring are what truly fuel my passion
What sets me apart is my boundless creativity and vision. I have endless ideas and love bringing them to life through my photography. Each image aims to capture a moment and evoke a sense of wonder and emotion, creating a timeless and magical narrative.
A crucial element of my creative process is the integration of makeup, styling, and art direction. I love bringing a vision to life by carefully selecting outfits, applying makeup that enhances natural beauty, and directing the overall aesthetic to align with my artistic style. This approach ensures that every detail contributes to a cohesive and enchanting image.
I sometimes appear in my fine art images. During test shoots, I step in front of the camera to help with selecting locations, assessing lighting, and art direction, including clothing styles and portrait composition. The test shoots can be a lot of fun and I am especially grateful to my assistant photographer, who is always ready to jump on camera or also stand in for a shot, making the process smooth and enjoyable.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Along my journey, I’ve learned many important lessons. One of the most profound has been finding my true self and learning to listen to my heart, which is deeply connected to my guidance. Embracing this inner wisdom has been crucial, especially when navigating the ups and downs of my career.
I’ve also learned the importance of not beating myself up when things don’t go as planned. The ego has its place, but it’s essential not to let it take center stage. Staying humble and grateful helps maintain perspective and resilience. I believe that a person can lead effectively while also collaborating harmoniously with others. Kindness, far from being a weakness, is a strength that fosters meaningful connections and positive outcomes.
For me, the journey is as much spiritual as it is artistic. The art I create is an integral part of who I am, and this alignment between my personal growth and creative expression makes perfect sense. Embracing these lessons has helped me grow both personally and professionally and I’m committed to continuing this path with an open heart and a humble spirit.
I am always excited about the future as a photographer and artist. I am ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities and eager to continue my journey of capturing the world’s beauty through my lens.
