Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Walsh
Hi Matthew , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello my name is Matthew Walsh, I’m from Long Island, NY. My story begins at the age of 11 years old when I got my first camera. I started my own personal YouTube channel and created new content weekly, since then I fell in love with my passion for Filmmaking.
As a kid I struggled in school, having my own camera helped bring out the creative side in me. I always dreamed of extending my creative journey with filmmaking after high school, which lead me to my dream college “SCAD” The Savannah College Of Arts & Design. Finding this school was everything I dreamed of I am currently studying Film & Television there with a minor of Cinematography.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not easy to get to where I am today, Ive been through many ups and downs, which I look at it as a positive with out the downs there would be no ups. As I said before all my education I struggled with many different things, reading, spelling, etc and because of that my school put me in inclusion classes. I felt separated from everyone, however this lead me to make more friends. I was “The IEP Kid” That’s my newest film I’m currently bringing to life about a student who struggles with a learning disability and how he perseveres through the down times in his life. Without these struggles I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Cinematographer also know as a “Director of Photography” Ive been apart of many different projects, including collaborating with many different “SCAD” students and “NYU” students. I also love to write and direct, my hope is to spread my story to the world and have it hit close to them. If I’m not working on a project of my own I’m helping others with their own, Ive done almost every job there is including key grip, key gaffer, assistant director and more.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Growing up as a child my family owned a RV, we’d travel around the USA with it and visit many different camp grounds, I love to explore new places that I haven’t been to.
