Conversations with Eric Clark

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Clark

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had music in my blood. When I was just a kid, I used to stare at my father while he jammed on the guitar. One day he showed me a few chords. I spent my 20’s attending different concerts that were those small theatre “intimate” performances listening to some of my favs. I would sit there the whole time thinking…”I should be doing that!”

I found myself in my 30’s with a barely used guitar under my bed. I would pull it out occasionally and play it just to make it worth keeping.

One day it hit me….

I knew I had a talent for performing. I knew in my heart that I had a special gift to stand on stage and deliver music at a high level.

I just had no idea how to get what was in my heart into reality.

How would I ever get this wild idea off the ground?

I picked up the phone and started calling different night-life spots, restaurants, and venues in downtown Savannah to see if they would just let me play for free. In the meantime, I honed my craft, practiced until my hands bled, and stayed ready!

I started taking my guitar and going down to city market and just playing for whomever would listen. Weeks went by and suddenly I got a call from Andaz Savannah and they offered me an opportunity to perform.

I jumped on it immediately.

In the next few weeks I would find myself standing in front of opportunities that were now coming my way. Little by little places and spots to perform were interested. Now my goal was to perform as if it was my last chance!

Four years after standing in City Market playing to a handful of people, I was standing on the main stage at Plant District LIVE!

I am living proof that if you have a dust-covered dream hiding in the back of your soul it’s time to pull it out and GO FOR IT! I can’t tell you that it’s not going to cost a ton of sweat, and a lot of perseverance, but I can promise you that the right doors will open!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has NOT been smooth, but doable.

The struggles were simply that the music industry is a business of “NO’s.”

I had to simply trust in the fact that this would work, and work well, if I didn’t give up.

In a world of “NO’S” I found a few “YES’S” and that’s what I built upon.

I tried to get so good they couldn’t tell me no anymore.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create music that people want to jive to! My strength is taking songs (original and covers) and making them something unforgettable. I don’t just “cover” a song. I believe strongly in making something organic and creating a memory for the audience!

You want to crowd leaving saying, “that was amazing, freeing, and fun!”

I’m probably most know for the “creativity” within the performance. If the ears of the listener isn’t grabbed, then I’ve failed. It’s not so much impressing people as much as creating an atmosphere we they feel that creativity themselves. Furthermore, you want them to be apart of the performance!

Take something that is known and lead people into a new dimension of music. I love taking people on journey through time….musically!

If I don’t see the crowd grooving to what I”m doing, I shift into another gear! Don’t allow your talent to be so confined to ONE type of creativity that you lose the chance to make musically art!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Oh my!

Savannah is the spot for me. Some love the bigger vibes of the west coast (nothing wrong with that) and some love the broadways of Nashville, but Savannah is second to none! The city glows with history, movie scenes, and such a rich melting pot of people.

The city has epic charm with the massive oaks, coffee shops, and people strolling down Broughton Street!

The parking is a little tough for working artists! They will ticket you for any reason! I’m hoping they will offer “musical artist” passes for a monetary donation! LOL
