Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Rosati
Hi Kaitlyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My road to travel writing and content creation is unconventional. I was a bartender in NYC for about ten years. During that time, I saved money, and would take advantage of any three or four-day weekends to jaunt to far-flung destinations like Colombia or Belize. During a summer 2017 trip to Venice, Italy, I started my blog No Man Nomad (www.nomannomad.net). No Man Nomad was initially designed to give brief updates on my solo travels around the globe, but eventually provided me with enough inspiration to quit my job and solo travel the world for six months. So, in early 2019, I did just that.
While on the road, I frequently updated my blog and Instagram, slowly but surely gaining a following. This inspired me to start applying for freelance writing gigs, and in April 2019, I began writing for a small online publication. I eventually returned to NYC and went back to school with a strong focus on journalism and gender justice.
When the Covid-19 pandemic swept the world under its feet, I was not sacrificed from its wrath. Naturally, nobody was looking for a travel writer at this time, let alone a beginner. This left me feeling incredibly discouraged, so I switched gears, and focused more energy into my next-in-line passion: gender rights. I interned for United Nations Women and wrote policies for the Global Compact for Migration, a document that is still alive today to better help protect women and girl migrants. At the end of my internship, I felt hooked on the work, and applied to law school.
Fast-forward to one year later, and I was enrolled in CUNY School of Law, my top law school of choice for its strong mission of protecting human rights. After one semester, my body crashed. It’s almost as though I had been in some type of survival mode triggered by the pandemic, and felt I needed to do something to properly occupy the time. With a total of $700 in my bank account, I used some old Airbnb and United Airlines credits to book a solo trip to Costa Rica, the first time I had properly traveled since that epic backpacking trip in 2019.
As cliche as it is, it hit me like a ton of bricks that law school was not for me, while on a boat in Costa Rica, nonetheless. After my Costa Rican boat epiphany, I went back to my room and spent hours updating my travel resume. I made a list of everywhere I had been, and of all of my areas of expertise. Hey, there’s nothing like knowing what you want only to be realized by living a life you DON’T want. When it came time to board my flight back to Costa Rica, I had a panic attack at the thought of returning to law school.
But alas, I returned anyway, because I didn’t yet have the right backup plan. I sat in the back row of every class and massive applied to every travel writing gig in the game. I spent hours updating my blog, learning the ins and outs of SEO, teaching myself how to edit videos so I could create better content, and truly dedicating every waking hour to my business. It paid off. By that fall, while still enrolled in school, I finally had the confidence and proof that I could do it, so I walked away from law school to be a travel writer/content creator.
Now, here we are! My brand No Man Nomad continues to flourish, and I frequently work with brands for sponsorships. I am flown to all corners of the world, from Alaska to Zambia to Antarctica, to write and create content. My work has been published in outlets such as Forbes, Time Out, InsideHook, Matador Network, and most notably, I write a weekly dining column entitled NYC Hidden Dining Gems for the New York Daily News.
I love my life, and worked my ass off to get here. I am grateful every single day, and I’m only just getting started.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always very outgoing and creative. I have a music background, and I always loved to travel, aside from one major flight scare when I flew to Florida at age 11.
I moved from New York to Los Angeles to pursue a music career only two weeks after turning 17. I am extremely fortunate to have such supportive parents who made these antics much easier to pursue.
