Hidden Gems: Meet Christi Hulme of Candles & More by Christi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christi Hulme

Hi Christi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Twenty-two years ago, I moved to Savannah to be with my husband, Brett Hulme. I began my career as a Customer Service Agent for an airline, quickly climbing the ranks. Despite enjoying my interactions with people, I felt unfulfilled in my role and explored various fields, including a stint in politics, which I realized was more my husband’s strength than mine. Taking a step back, I began to experiment with different crafts, eventually discovering my passion for candle making. For a few years, I made candles on and off, but about five years ago, I truly immersed myself in the craft. As my creations piled up, my friends and family could no longer accept any more candles, and my home started resembling a candle factory. My husband suggested I either take a break or turn my passion into a business, which led to the birth of “Candles & More by Christi.”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been an easy road by any means. Now in my fifties, starting a business from scratch at this age is definitely a risk, and some people thought I was nuts for doing it. I am self-taught, which took a lot of time and was extremely challenging. Many people think candle making is an easy craft, but it’s much more complex than slapping a wick into a jar and pouring some wax. There’s a science behind it, and there were days when I felt like I might have gotten in over my head, but I persevered.

I began extremely small, selling my creations to friends, family, and their networks, relying on word of mouth since I didn’t have the finances for marketing or advertising. Although I’m still small, I have established a loyal customer base, opened an online store, and found joy in participating in craft fairs and shows. Each step has been a rewarding experience, allowing me to share my passion for candle making with others.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Candles & More by Christi?
In my candle-making career, I specialize in decorative candles, crafting a variety of types including scented candles, pillars, and wax melts. However, I derive the most satisfaction from creating beautiful candles that are so stunning, customers hesitate to burn them. Known for my perfectionism, I apply the same high standards to both my craft and customer service, a skill I’ve honed throughout my entire working life.

I genuinely love working with people, striving to meet their needs and make them happy. This passion is reflected in my work, and my customers return time and again, confident that they will receive both quality products and exceptional service. I use only the finest materials to ensure the highest quality, and I stand firmly behind everything I sell. If I offer it, it’s because I LOVE it and believe that my customers will too.

What makes you happy?
My happiness stems from the love and support of my friends and family. I truly believe I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I am fortunate to have the best husband anyone could ask for, along with a wonderful family and exceptional friends. The moments I cherish most are those spent with them. If I can combine that joy with my passion for making and selling candles, it doesn’t get any better than that.
