Life & Work with Jeff Zeigler of West Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Zeigler

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I got good with drawing around the time I was in the fourth grade. I stuck with drawing and gradually got into painting as I got older. I made some bad decisions and got into some trouble. Then I met some pivotal people like Artists Nan Mercer and Robert Jameson. I began engaging in various art projects with Mercer and Jameson such as matting paintings and backyard painting sessions with Robert Jameson. I did a few art shows around Orangeburg South Carolina and took on a rigorous painting schedule, while working in a factory. Then, I moved to Savannah GA and began showing art here. I went to Armstrong Atlantic State University and got my Bachelor’s Degree. I showed art at the University and other locations such as galleries and coffee shops. I took some time off from showing art ,and began working in the drug and alcohol field. I continued to paint pictures. Next I went to Graduate school and I started showing my art to friends at at a gallery in Savannah, with the Savannah Art Association. Now I currently work in the field of Mental Health and Addictive Disease Treatment. At times I facilitate Art Therapy coping skills in groups, which I live . Currently, I have some paintings up in Coffee Deli located in Habersham village. I am showing with the Savannah Art Association. I plan on showing some art at the Airport Gallery at the Savannah Hilton Head International gallery in Pooler GA. I will begin showing at the airport in November of 2024. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road. When I was younger I got in trouble partying and it got way out of control. Fortunately, I got help thanks to friends and family. Also, there have been times when making a living has been rough, but thanks to God and my wife I have made it through.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a predominantly self taught visual artist. I mostly paint pictures. My work is folk art but it also borders on contemporary art. I cross genre’s and stay original.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
There are others who have encouraged me. Kevin Keeney showed me how to draw in the fourth grade. Both my mother and father offered love and support. My friend Robert Jameson painted with me and encouraged me to focus on my own style and he said “There’s a lot you can do with painting”.
