Conversations with Nia Christina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Christina

Hi Nia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Connecticut, and music has always been woven into my life. In middle and high school, I played clarinet, bass clarinet, and percussion. While I never felt my voice was my strongest instrument, I found joy in the rhythm and melody of playing. Music runs in my blood, my great uncles were part of the band Tavares, and that’s where I realized the depth of my love for it. Beyond school, I taught myself guitar and learned enough piano to do covers but not enough to impress anyone. Still, it all added to my connection with music, deepening my love for the craft.

It wasn’t until my high school band teacher shared that he got his master’s in sound design from SCAD that I discovered the world of sound design. He explained that audio had many different pathways. This led me down on Google rabbit hole of different paths, different timelines and different ways to get there. My dream became attending SCAD, but life took a different turn.

In 2020, I faced a significant loss in my family, and with the pandemic that followed, my plans to move across the country were halted. Transferring schools became an option, but as a first-generation college student, I realized navigating student loans and paying out-of-pocket was going to be a challenge. That’s when I found Georgia Southern, and through it, the Georgia Film Academy. These places offered me the tools, the education, and the chance to continue my pursuit of sound design, while staying grounded financially.

Today, I’m chasing that same dream I first discovered years ago, now in Georgia. With every small project I take on and every skill I refine, I’m reminded of the path that brought me here and how much further I have to go. It’s all about turning that childhood dream into a reality.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When it came to school finances, I was on my own. It was my dream, and I knew I had to go after it. However, with that came semesterly stresses—being dropped from courses, applying for scholarships, and maintaining a busy work schedule.

On top of that, the death of my older brother in 2020 made it difficult to pursue what I wanted. I didn’t even know what I wanted. I hadn’t realized how much I did to impress him, and losing him caused me to spiral—until I rediscovered myself and my love for audio.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a freelance sound designer and audio engineer, certified in Pro Tools. I do recordings of songs, live audio mixing, post audio mixing, adding sound effects, and voice-over to a production. Overall I offer a range of services from recording to editing. My expertise spans both music and film audio.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to trust in God and align my will with His. As my faith grew stronger, my life changed. I gained a new perspective—whether things went my way or not, or in moments of stress, I found peace and clarity knowing there was a greater plan at work.
