Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Carter
Hi Olivia , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I had been vacationing to Savannah for years with my family and never imagined I would end up spending 3 years there for college.
I’m a Spring 2024 graduate from the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences (CLASS) with a degree from the JMC Program in Mass Communications (PR concentration). My SSU experience was rich with community service and involvement in organizations like ECHOS Inc., Certified Members Only, SGA, and many more. This was coupled with internships in politics, corporate Goodwill of Southeast GA, and The Savannah Morning News. I was eventually able to secure a place at WJCL22 News, where I played a big role in enhancing media coverage for the university, ensuring that student stories received the attention they deserved.
Immediately after graduation, I found myself working in communications for Emory University’s Artificial Intelligence Health Institute and serving as a Digital Associate and Social Media Producer for Biden for President, which led to my current role with the Kamala Harris for President HQ team. I encourage students to recognize that from Savannah State, “You can get anywhere from here” and to make their voices heard through voting this November!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not a smooth road. As a first generation college student, I navigated both financial and physical hardships. That is what made community to important to me in Savannah because the community remained my backbone and gave me something to pour back into despite my challenges.

What matters most to me is family and community. I am big on giving back to those who help nurture you along your journey. I believe in divine purpose so I never miss the opportunity to network or connect with an individual. Conversation and communication is very important to me because you not only know what you could gain from conversation but what people can gain from you. It matters most to me to reach down and teach one as I am pulling myself up. Community will never not be apart of who I am, and i am grateful to the Savannah community for giving me my voice.
