Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarain Robbins
Sarain, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up, my dream has always been to be a famous singer… but I didn’t actually know how to sing. Later in middle school, I’d developed an interest in acting after a few theater classes. Then I graduated high school and realized that I wanted to be a creator of some sort. After a couple years of procrastinating, I graduated high school and started posting content on my Youtube channel in 2019. On that channel, I filmed and edited storytimes, hair tutorials and girl-talks. It was to my surprise that editing my content and intros would be the gateway to my career as a motion and graphic designer. I would stay up late nights just to get editing done because I loved doing it. As a Youtuber, my goal was to create content that was entertaining (the storytimes), inspiring/informative (the tutorials and girl-talks). Soon after, I got accepted into both Georgia Southern University and the Savannah College of Art & Design — the only two colleges that I’d applied to. I initially wanted to go to Georgia Southern and major in graphic design because I felt it would’ve been easier for me to “fit in” at a regular university. However, after a lot of consideration, I chose the Savannah College of Art & Design because if I’m going to major in something creative, why not go to the school that literally specializes in creativity, right? So, the first year and a half in college was extremely tough as I was trying to find myself and purpose. Towards the end of my junior year, I’d come to the realization that I wasn’t placed in SCAD to fit in, but to stand out. God wanted to use me as His mouthpiece, to spread love and truth to my peers — above all else, I believe that was my purpose of being at SCAD specifically. The same goal of inspiring, entertaining and informing that I had as a Youtuber is still my goal today as a motion/graphic designer — this time it just includes Jesus!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been challenging since the beginning, I don’t think the challenges will ever end — only change with time. At first during the first two years of college, the challenges I faced were internal; often questioning my ability to execute which caused an intense indecisiveness throughout my ideation processes. Comparing myself to peers made me feel like I didn’t have a purpose or identity in the creative field — thus increasing my own creator’s block.
Eventually, I grew to accept my gift as exactly that — a gift. I didn’t do anything to be naturally creative but it was by God’s own design that He made me creative. So when I started looking to God (the original creator) for inspiration, I’d noticed my ideas flowing a lot smoother and the challenges that arose, I found it easier to overcome because I’d began including God in the ebbs and flows of my creative process. Now, the challenges I face are more-so external with issues concerning time management. I often get hit with a lot of personal ideas while at the same time receiving design requests from others.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I describe myself as a graphic and 2d motion designer. Throughout my time in college, I’ve discovered a love for working with film and directing my own projects. So today, I specialize in video editing, custom typography, 2d logo design, flyers, invitations and digital banners (i.e Youtube), etc.
My ultimate reason for wanting to create stems from my desire to glorify the Lord Jesus. Additionally, my goal is to share truth and trigger people’s thinking through creative concepts and visuals — that is what both what sets me apart and what I am most proud of.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I have grown to love the architecture, coffee shops and eateries in my city. Usually, I’m captivated by skyscrapers in cities like Charlotte or Atlanta but my appreciation for a small town like Savannah has definitely evolved.
