Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerneshiea Wright
Kerneshiea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been in the cosmetology industry for 30 years. I went to Savannah school of cosmetology. I am a master cosmetologist, a cosmetology instructor, a certified trichologist and state certified ceu
Provider. One day my mom said you should do hair, you remind me of them girls by Savannah state ( Too Groovy Hair Salon at the time). I didn’t think it could be a career but it was easy because I had been doing stuff since I could remember. I did my aunts hair all the time and she said you are so gentle you should be a beautician. The rest was history. I never thought it would be a career, but it was easy to me. I was doing my own hair friends hair, hair in the kitchen for $10 per person for a few years and while I was in school. I started at Natrons hair studio on bull street in 1998 and after navigating through ten salons in 2007 I opened up my own salon Flawless hair Studio & Design on bull street right next door from where I started. I’ve since moved to 240 Eisenhower drive a salon with a team of 5 stylist and one assistant. The best team ever. We are like family.
We just hosted our annual stylists and barbers ball here in Savannah ga. Highlighting elite industry icons that had paved the way for upcoming stylists and barbers. We honor them for their service and dedication for 30 plus years it’s a red carpet event That ignites an evening of local entertainment Tastee horderves awards and networking. Next year we are planning to bring Savannahs first beauty expo here to Savannah to be held at the Savannah convention center highlighting the city of Savannah and it historic highlights incorporating what use to be the fantasy hair show now the Enchanted Tresses, hair art show. Also what will be out 6th annual stylist & barbers ball, Amethyst Ball which is our theme.
I’ve faced obstacles as a salon owner having multiple stylist that challenges you when it comes to separating business from personal matters, and sometimes it’s simply a power struggle. Not paying their booth rent on time, being a single mother with a business, trying to build and find resources to pivot and branch out to do more in order to get more. Because you need more! But as a small business owner you have to work the business in order for the business to stay afloat until you can get dependable people to help keep the business running smoothly and efficiently . Until then you are the business and you make the necessary sacrifices to keep the business going. Sometimes your home suffers in order for the business to sustain. Sometimes I want to pack up and move in the salon. Lol. Another obstacle is once you have a little room to wiggle and branch out it’s get rough and overwhelming and scary. Fearful of failure but I believe you’ve already failed if you don’t try. So what do you have to lose? Another obstacle is getting people to believe in your dream and your vision. When you hold the key to that you have to look beyond your comfort zone. If your comfortable your going to miss something.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The challenge over all is believing that you will build the platform for your own vision. It may take longer with less support because your vision isn’t cookie cutter and the obstacle you face is finding the support of the community who visions the way that you do. I’m here for it. Just treat people the way you want to be treated and when the opportunity presents it self power up
And go for it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
