Community Highlights: Meet Stephanie Joy Sweeney of Savannah Dental

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Joy Sweeney

Hi Stephanie Joy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I had decided I wanted to be some type of doctor at a very young age but wasn’t really sure of what kind exactly. It really wasn’t until I was older that I really realized how much influence my dentist had in my development of self. What I mean is I fell out of a second story window when I was very young and it damaged my developing teeth. But my dentist was great and esthetically repaired my teeth as they came in. It wasn’t until I met a friend who was very shy and covered her face when she laughed and things because she was congenitally missing teeth that I realized how my personality may have been altered had I not had such a wonderful dentist. I never lived a life afraid of laughing or embarrassed of my smile. So I grew up laughing and smiling with abandon. That’s when I realized how impactful a smile is. So then I went to dental school immediately after college. And never looked back. Some other things that shaped me is my love of action sports. It started with wakeboarding and then kiteboarding, surfing, foil surfing, snowboarding and even kite foiling. I travel almost monthly to surf and snowboard in some of the tops spots in the world.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Dental school is difficult. Owning a business is difficult. Managing a team is difficult. Connecting with patients from all different backgrounds can be difficult. It’s hard not to take things personally when a team member leaves or a patient leaves. It’s why dentists have such high suicide rates. People can sometimes be mean to us because we may be delivering bad news or that’s how they cope with their fear. Either way it can be difficult to not take it personally

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are dentistry done differently. I’ve always personally enjoyed going to the dentist but I also enjoy going to the spa and getting a massage. At times a massage can be uncomfortable but I know it’s good for me and the sounds and the smells and the space can be super relaxing. So we tried to create a dental environment that felt more like a spa. We also try to focus on prevention and utilize the latest technology to assess things like growth and development, dental airway/breathing, and occlusion. These assessments can prevent emergency visits from things like broken/fractured teeth, gum disease and prevent big heath issues like preventing development of sleep apnea

What matters most to you? Why?
Personal Growth. I am always striving to be learning and growing. I’m 850 days into learning Spanish on Duolingo. Now I’m also doing French and learning the stock market. I recently finished a maxi residency course from tufts university in Dental Sleep and facial pain.
