Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamel Porter
Hi Jamel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story begins as a young black boy growing up in Savannah Georgia in the faith-based family. I grew up as a mild child that read books, stayed to himself, avoid confrontations as possible but was ready to rumble whenever necessary, and was musically inclined at the age 10 or 11. Because of my faith upbringing, I have a strong, spiritual grounding that has helped me in every aspect of my life and because of that faith, it started and helped in my creation of music. Because of my faith, my childhood and early adult life has been very awkward and challenging. My first career was at the age of 18 as a CNA at a nursing home off White Bluff after being a bagger for three years prior at Kroger‘s on Highway 17. After working as a CNA for a year while studying at Savannah Tech, financial hardship started and pushed me to join the military. I served in the US Air Force for three years as a military cop. During my military service, I endured rigorous and hard physical training that end up harming my mental, emotional, and physical health. In 2016, I was discharged after three years of service, and went back to school while enduring the hardships that the military placed on me. After one year of school, more hardships followed and push me to Texas. I stayed in Texas for four years and while in Texas, I earned my associate’s degree in exercise science while working as a personal trainer enduring the hardships that I encounter in Texas. It was in Texas that propelled me to get my bachelor’s of science in exercise science while moving back to Savannah, Georgia seemingly overcoming my fears and obstacles. As of March 20 25, I have completed my Master’s of Science in Exercise Science specializing in Health and Exercise Rehabilitation! I am happy with my career choice, with my faith that brought me through all my hardships and my music that I continue to work on personally!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey has not been smooth. I have faced many obstacles financially, emotionally, physically, and mentally. The military left me with deep scars emotionally, mentally, and physically that I still deal with on a daily basis. I grew up, not the most wealthiest human being, but had the necessities provided. Family relationships are complicated and sometimes troubling, but still respectable and loving from my point of view. I have 4 adult siblings and one baby sister whom I know are tough but extremely loving. My mother is a strong woman of God and raised my siblings and I like a general full of true agape love. My father was a real man with a tough exterior but with a heart of gold. I grew up as an awkward child and did not have many friends. My life was very very challenging, lol, but it didn’t destroy my soul! I persevered and accomplished many things in my life despite the rough upheaval.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a Master’s degree in Exercise Science specializing in Health and Exercise Rehabilitation. With this title, I am one of the clinicians that leads patients in exercise prescriptions based on the patient’s health conditions, health, history, family, history, medications, etc. The exercise prescription provided is used to treat and rehabilitate various health conditions and diseases back to optimal health. Most of these exercise prescriptions are utilized in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation centers, both as inpatient and outpatient. The scope of my practice also extends to motor learning for some functional rehabilitation programs and reading and interpreting EKGs/ECGs.
What makes you happy?
God and Music make me happy because music is a part of my soul and my Lord created me. My soul creates music and my God gave me the power to create! This gives me the role as a creative lol! As a creative, you can find my music on various social media sites such as YouTube and Instagram. I hope you enjoy my music and you like, share, and spread love!
