Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Ball
Hi Evan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Co-owner Davion Ellis had been traveling the country doing tattoo conventions and has tattooed in almost every state. He eventually stopped in Indianapolis and decided to plant roots. He had a tattoo friend he was wanting to start a shop with but needed one last component – an investor.
Co-owner Evan Ball has been a tattoo collector and fan of the industry for some time. He eventually found Davion’s art and got a cool tattoo and stayed in contact over the years. Eventually they ran into each other again and started talking. Evan was interested in investing and has a business and marketing background. He quickly became more than an investor and is now vital to TrapDoor’s organization and success.
The two of them have overcome many hurdles in operating the business, including buying out their third partner due to differences of opinion. Now, things are operating smoothly and they have a great crew behind them to help lift each other up for the better.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle has definitely been the people aspect. We have a big studio with about 12 people involved – artists, apprentices, and owners. We have worked hard to get rid of bad characters who do not fit the vibe of the shop and the majority, including one of our partner owners.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Davion is one of the best artists out there who can look at something and then immediately apply skills and techniques to replicate and add his style to. He specializes in anime, galaxy, and many other tattoo styles. He is known for his friendly attitude and his ability to make everyone his friend. He truly is Luffy from One Piece but in human form. He is most proud of the progress he has made in life – born in Jamaica, eventually moved to Florida, found his way to Indiana from traveling the country as a tattoo artist on the convention circuit, to owning his own shop with a team of friends and upcoming artists. All of this while still keeping his art first and foremost and never faltering on quality. He still has clients coming to get his work from all over!
How do you think about happiness?
Both owners love to see the artists at the shop learning, laughing, and progressing. They are like proud dads in that sense. The team building and friendships will last forever. It’s one of the best feelings getting the crew together after a successful flash event or celebrating a birthday.
