Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Singletary.
Hi Audrey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I had my first market with Weak Link in April 2023, shortly before moving to Austin, Texas. I spent a brief (115 degree) summer in Austin doing 3-4 markets every week, before landing in Savannah in November, 2023.
The vision for Weak Link had been in development for about a year before “officially” launching. As a multi-faceted artist/crafter, I found it overwhelming to narrow down a “niche”. Originally, the plan was to design & screen print t-shirts. Some of the stickers I make are repurposed designs from my original vision for the brand.
I started creating statement earrings late 2022 after making earrings for my friends for xmas gifts, and haven’t stopped since.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Getting started was difficult, I felt like I had a lot to prove but struggled to take flight. I received more rejection letters from markets in my first three months than I ever have. Being the new person to the scene is not easy, and I lived in three different cities within my first year, essentially “starting over” each time.
Larger cities have more resources and opportunities, and can be more welcoming to newcomers than some of the smaller cities (in my experience) with established and tight-knit scenes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make fun statement earrings & accessories.
The earring charms are carefully hand sculpted from polymer (oven-bake) clay and given a uv resin coating for shine and protection. They are then assembled and placed on my hand-stamped backing cards. I do not use molds or pre-made charms.
The stickers are my designs as well, but I have them printed by a small company in Portland, OR.
My work has an edge and humor to it that is uniquely “me” and sets Weak Link apart from others.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I LOVE Savannah!
I grew up in Charleston, SC and Savannah is like it’s cooler sister. It has the same charm of the south, but is a little grittier and less uptight.
I love the parks and natural beauty of the city- the area I live in is absolutely perfect. Most things I need are a short walk or bike ride away.
Things I like least? It would be nice if there was a more vibrant music scene here. That’s something I felt like I got spoiled with in Austin and even Charleston.
