Life & Work with Angela Heyward of Southside Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Heyward.

Hi Angela, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I dived into the wonderful world of entrepreneurship totally by happenstance. Back in 2019 I decorated a party for my grandson’s birthday and from there people began to ask me to do their parties. I led with the disclaimer that I had no idea what I was doing lol, but somehow it develop into a full fledge business. Over time, I begin to join event planner groups, YouTube, looking at Pinterest, and just watched others who have been in the industry a lot longer than me and gained ideas and tips on what works and what hasn’t worked. August of this year will make six years that I have been in business and I am looking forward to many more.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Entrepreneurship in itself is definitely not a smooth road. Obstacles present themselves in many ways, such as feeling alone, feeling as if you’re not good enough, wondering when you would begin to see the same amount of success as some of your other counterparts. The old saying comparison is the thief of joy is totally correct. I had to change my mindset and begin to concentrate totally on myself and not look at where others were and comparing myself to them. Another thing I struggled with, was not understanding why when I asked people who were doing the same thing as I was for help and they didn’t wanna give me help. They didn’t wanna give me tips or some of their “secrets”. Gaining clients was another thing that I struggled with early on. It seemed as if none of my social media posts were making it pass the few people I had in my circle, and I often wondered if it was even worth it. Another thing I struggled with was pricing-I didn’t know what to charge because I wanted the business, and I struggled with charging my worth just to gain customers and quickly realized that was not the route to go. I have since learned that it is not about quantity and it is all about quality. Once I took my eyes off people and turned towards my faith, I began to have consistent traffic to my page. I began to have bookings, and most of my events are from repeat customers and friends.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full-time entrepreneur. In addition to the event business I have, which is called Another Level Decor & Design – I own and operate a full-time T-shirt shop in Garden City, Georgia called 365BLACK Apparel. I specialize in all things fun exciting and memorable. I am known for giving my customers over and beyond what they asked for and for recognizing that in any industry without the people coming to you and patronizing your business, whatever it is -you would not have a business. I am most proud of the fact that I took a chance on myself and whatever happens after this is just to the grace and glory of God. I know for sure that I did not get here alone. What sets me apart from others I believe is the time that I take to speak to my clients making sure I have a great understanding of what it is that They want to see-how we can bring their vision to life, whether it is for an event or for a T-shirt order. I pride myself on the experience that I give people. Planning and prepping for Events is stressful, I utilize my skills and services to put people at ease take some things off of their plate and make it where they want to come back and use me again.

How do you define success?
Success to me is defined as at the end of the day did I give my all to whatever it is I was trying to accomplish. Success is a daily examination of myself, my goals and my motives. If I keep my motives pure and reach at least some of my goals for the day and if I know that I did everything with good intention- to me, I have success.
