Today we’d like to introduce you to Dame Darcy.
Hi Dame, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As one who was inspired to publish books by victorian works by Oscar Wilde , fairy tales, the Oz and Wonderland series, i loved as a kid.
In todays world of short term rewards and Tic Toc , zines and publishing remains relevant.
Because actual books and paper art items remain in the world to create a forever legacy for future generations to enjoy, while all the other media will disappear or be buried online in time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Publishing isn’t easy, what with keeping up with trends during all the changes in media for 3 decades.
But I’m thankful to remain in the game with my beloved , loyal , literary agent and supportive people who continue to care.
My main comic title is Meat Cake , being on alternative publishing house, Fantagraphics, and current auto bio graphic novel on Feral House.
Also experience working with the mainstream publishers in NYC and LA too.
Like DC and Marvel as well as graphic novels on classics like Putnam Penguin, Holt, Random House etc.
After that I returned to self publishing our tarot deck series, Mermaid Tarot, Witchy Cat, and Queen Alice, based on Ryder Waite Smith.
Currently my husband Mr. Pleasant, and I
run our online publishing and distribution business in Savannah.
We go to Florida all the time, we love it there and do the Orlando Mega Con convention as guests ,
as well as the Staarcon tarot convention in West Palm Beach.
Self publishing is so empowering for everyone with a story to tell and DIY is still dear to my heart, sharing it with others means so much.
And anyone of any age can do it!
Photocopying comics zine style in the early 90’s is my origin story and I still have a Pateron where I send mail art as prizes to my patrons monthly.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Our 50 Episode TV series Turn of the Century directed by Lisa Hammer , blends koo koo with surrealism, animation and storytelling in a variety show with puppets and animation all with a unique silent film aesthetic.
Now seen on Night Flight, premiering last year on Women’s Day and did so well we screened a short from it in MoMA this year.
To watch , go to night flight streaming!
All books and other art items are available at Dame Darcy.com.
My comics / films / paintings/ dolls are made to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed.
Hiraeth: An untranslatable Welsh word.
Homesickness, for a home which maybe never was. A sweet sadness, through spiritual longing and nostalgia for ancient places to which we cannot return.
Always pulling on the heart, a distinct feeling of missing something irretrievably lost.
The echo of our soul’s past, and grief for this loss. Searching endlessly over the cracked asphalt of the parking lot of an abandoned building, the empty veiled winding roads of a moonlit dream world, the printed blue sky in a children’s book from long ago.
It is nowhere and everywhere.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
In the old days before the internet i just looked them up in the phone book and called them directly. I met Guy Maddin and Edward Gorey this way. Also I walked into the MTV building and started working with them this way.
My mentors were my highschool teacher Mary Noble, also the animator, M.Henry Jones, and Courtney Love, who introduced me to Anna Sui. Now I’m everyones Grandma. And I’ve been working on this role for a lifetime.
Nowadays I hear you can just slide into peoples DM’s.
