Today we’d like to introduce you to Caspian Dall.
Hi Caspian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was an aspiring filmmaker throughout high school, so when it was time to choose a college, I knew I wanted to give it a real shot. When I finally arrived at SCAD in the fall of 2023, I was excited to be surrounded by like-minded peers. I had pretty much decided that I was going to pursue a career as a producer until one fateful production meeting for a short called Graveyard Shift. At the end of our meeting, we realized that we didn’t have an Assistant Director. I (somewhat begrudgingly) volunteered to step in. After that set, I fell in love. I’ve been pursuing a career as an Assistant Director ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish I could brag about how arduous this journey has been, but I gotta count my blessings. I work on nearly all of my projects with my best friend, Arielle Borges. She is a spectacular producer and a big reason that I get to do what I love. The support of the SCAD filmmaking community offsets all of my biggest challenges.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, I AD, so most of my responsibilities in pre-production have to do with organizing all of the moving pieces and creating a schedule that works for everyone. When we finally make it to set, my responsibility is making sure people stick to the schedule. I was told by a friend of mine that being an AD was like being a summer camp counselor. In my opinion, truer words were never spoken. While every AD has their own workflow, I like to be very involved in pre-production for months before the set. Every project is unique, and I like to think as an AD, it’s my job to establish a positive tone and figure out how each department can do their best work while having fun. Having fun on set is a major priority for me. At the end of the day, that’s why people pursue the arts. To have a good time!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think something that people may not know is that I love screenwriting. I’m going to be directing my first official short this coming winter. Stay tuned!
